New York Yankees: Exit Sandman

The New York Post and ESPN.com reported that tomorrow the greatest closer to ever played the game, New York Yankees Mariano Rivera will officially announce

English: New York Yankees Pitcher Mariano Rive...

Yankees Mariano Rivera on May 25th, 2008 vs. Seattle Mariners.

that he is hanging up his glove at the end of this 2013 season.

Joel Sherman of the NY Post learned that Rivera had had recently asked to speak privately with Hal and Hank Steinbrenner. It is believed that it was to tell him of his plans to call it a career after this season.

Mo’s retirement come as no surprise but that doesn’t make the reality of never hearing Metallica’s Enter Sandman after this season any less painful.

Unfortunately the timing of this is terrible because the Yankees organization is in dire straits, which means Mo might never pitch in a postseason game again.

What Mo truly deserves is a Ray Lewis type sendoff; where he gets the last out in Game 7 of the 2013 World Series. But thanks to Hal Steinbrenner the probability of that happening is almost none outside of a miracle.

So for now, here are some of Mariano Rivera’s greatest moments from 2011, a season when Mo saved # 602, the most in MB history.

** DON’T MISS MARIANO RIVERA’S RETIREMENT PRESS CONFERENCE on Saturday March 9, 2013 at 10 am on either ESPN or YES. The Yankees already have a scheduled press conference at that time so it would seem ideal, but this is just what I am guessing.

  4. The Yankees went on a long winning streak, and by the time they met Boston for a pivotal four-game series at Fenway Park in early September, they were only four games behind the Red Sox. Thank you.
