Cano and Mr. Cano’s performance in the 2011 HR Derby was one for the history books, as it reminded fans why they love baseball so much.
The father-and-son tandem could have been in their own backyard, as Mr. Cano, who did pitch in the Majors, looked completely at ease throwing to his son and the enjoyment they shared when Robbie hit the winning homer brought tears to the eyes of millions.
In case you missed the moving event, here is a video, courtesy of MLB.com and ESPN, of Robbie and Jose Cano’s victory:
Cano now has the honor that 2010 winner, Red Sox David Ortiz’s had in 2011, choosing who will represent the AL in this All-Star Weekend tradition; and hoping that everyone he asks wants to come to Kansas City.
Now if you were Cano, what sluggers would you be calling?
Here is my calling list, in order:
Now if you are wondering why the mighty Josh Hamilton is so far down on the list is because I doubt he will be able, or allowed to come to Kansas City this year.
The Rangers might not want to risk any kind of injury or setback to MLB’s best player by allowing Hamilton to partake. Keep in mind that Hamilton has already been missed time this season, and is injury prone so probably not be worth it in skipper Ron Washington’s mind.
Now though we are a few weeks away from the July 9th MLB HR Derby, I bet that Cano will be making phone calls sooner than later. It is only polite to guys like Encarnacion, Trumbo, Pujols and Dunn who might not be making the trip to KC otherwise.
So, who would you call if you were Robbie Cano….don’t you know?
Who did I missed on my list?
