His name even sounds star-like, as the 24-year old Almonte made his first start for the New York Yankees last night in right field.

It was about time that Vernon Wells road the bench, and that the Yankees give a switch-hitting rookie a shot at hitting big league pitching.

Wells couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat this month, so all Almonte needed to do was make contact with the ball to be considered more productive.

Well, Yankee fans got a lot more from Almonte in the team’s 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Over four at-bats, Almonte got three hits, scored a run, batted in another run, went deep, and was fanned once.

Almonte gave Yankee Universe a taste of what Nationals, Angels and Dodgers fans are experiencing daily with their young stars on the rise.

Who knows maybe Almonte is the Yankees version of a Mike Trout or a Bryce Harper?

It is way premature to make that kind of declaration about Almonte, but there is no denying that he was more than impressive.

The Dominican native was inked back in 2005 by the Yankees when he just 16 years old.

By 2009, Almonte started making an impression in the minors (All stats courtesy of baseball-reference.com).

Zoilo Almonte - Minors 2009-2013

Now the question is will Almonte turn into a star?

Or will last night go down as beginner’s luck, and the most successful of the youngster’s Major League career?

Bottom line is I am getting a tad ahead of myself after just one game, but imagining what a standout rookie like Almonte would do for the current state of the Yankees gave me Goosebumps.

Not sure comparing a guy who's never OPS'd over .820 above AA with Trout, Puig, or Harper is very sane.

That's because she didn't. She was wondering out loud. I'll take some offensive pop where I can get it. Maybe this will open some Yankees Brass eyes.
