But instead of getting a chance to win the game, the Yankees got cheated, literally.
Instead the door got slammed in the Yankees face and the game ended 4-5 in favor of the Baltimore Orioles when the game should have been tied, 5-5.
Top of 9th inning – Yankees are down 4-5, with 1-out and men on the corners. Teixeira hits a grounder to Oriole’s SS; SS throws to 2B for 1-out (Swisher), 2B throws to 1B attempting a 6-4-3 double play but Tex slides headfirst into bag. Tex was safe by a landslide but umpire calls him out. Game over, Yankees lose, and once again share first-place with the O’s in the division.
Here is a photo (courtesy of Yahoo Sports) of the blown call:
After fighting their hearts out to keep the game going, the Yankees got shafted BIG TIME!
There is no polite way to say this, but that umpire’s call was total crap. I mean even a Yankee hater could not debate this fact.
Considering these games have major playoff implications, umpires have to get these kind-of obvious calls right, or else it is going to be a long month.
I get that umpires are humans, and mistakes are inevitable but this seemed more like a lack of careful attention on the part of umpire Jerry Meals, who has been in the biz since 1992.
And the latest news, other than Teixeira being safe, the Yankees 1B also re-injured his strained calf running on the play making it a lose-lose for the Bronx Bombers.
“These games mean everything.”
Look it is what it is but as a baseball fan I had to get it off my chest.
