Once again, my sincerest CONGRADULATIONS to Mark Teixeria and Derek Jeter for winning Silver Sluggers.

The Jeter Family will have to build a house just for Derek’s awards. Now the one the means the most to our Captain (because only one he seems to not have won, other then a Cy Young) the MVP Award will be announced on November 23rd. Jeter is well in contention for this honor and I think he deserves it for so much more then just his stats alone.

And The Award Goes To…..

Gold Glove awards completed today, as MLB Award Season has officially started.

Spreading out nicely for the month after the World Series keeps talks and debates flowing. It also lightens the initial blow for baseball fans everywhere; whom are all adjusting to nights free of baseball.

Then before you know it, 2010 is upon us and hopes can fill fans hearts for the season to start.

My sincerest congratulations, to all the recipients thus far, who are in such an elite field.

Here are the 2009 Award Winners thus far (more to come):

COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

American League – Aaron Hill, 2B – Toronto Blue Jays

After suffering a concussion in 2008, Aaron Hills baseball future was in question. Hill’s determination to prove doubters wrong is a true inspiration that hard work can pay-off. Hill had only seven errors, with.991 fielding percentage and was first in home-runs (36), RBIs (108), total bases (340) and at-bats (682) out of all second baseman. This is after it took months for Hill just to ride a bike again.

National League – Chris Carpenter, SP – St. Louis Cardinals

Chris Carpenter finished the season with a record of 17-4 with a 2.24 ERA. Carpenter only allowed seven home-runs all season. Carpenter came back to baseball this season after being out since the playoffs in 2006. Tommy John surgery and then at his initial return a nerve damage in his shoulder, more surgery for the right-hander.In 2009 Carpenter came-back from it all and is in talk for the Cy Young Award as well.

DELIVERY MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD:

Mariano Rivera, RP – New York Yankees

This is the award for the best relief pitcher of the season. In the 2009 season, no question, no doubt that it could only be Mariano Rivera. Rivera is the greatest of all-time and at 40 years old he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Gotta go to Mo!!

Got Melk? The Yankees Finally Got The Message

Got Melk?

The Yankees sure can’t get enough of it! ‘It’ being the young, out-fielder in Melky Cabrera this season.

Today in a much-needed win by the Yanks, 24-year-old Melky hit for a cycle which has not been done in the organization since Tony Fernandez in 1995 and the 15th time in the history entirely. In a sense a cycle is the hitter’s equivalent to a pitcher having a no-hitter. For all who don’t know, a cycle is when a player hits a single, a double, a triple and a home-run all in the same game. It is a great accomplishment for any hitters resume.

That is just the icing on the cake for the switch hitting Cabrera. He has been a clutch hitter in-game deciding situations all season for the Yankees. This was a kid that almost was traded and lucky this guy stayed in pinstripes as here are what he has done for the team thus far:

  • Game deciding hits on April 22, May 15, May 23, and on June 4 caused Chris Berman referring to him as “Melky Way” Cabrera. John Sterling now has cemented the phrase “The Melk Man delivers” as a regular phrase as he has been so clutch for the Yanks enough times.
  • Melky is a switch hitter that has 10 homers, 40 RBI’s and his OBP is .355. His batting average is .292…hitting .303 from the left and .286 on the right.
  • Cabrera’s consistent, hero-like play earned him The Pepsi Clutch Player of the Month for May; fans voted all across the nation for the winner. The Melk-man had to beat out some strong competition: Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays, Roy Holliday of the Toronto Blue Jays, Torii Hunter of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers.
  • Hitting a cycle today is a great accomplishment that will cement Cabrera in the history books forever. WOW is all that can be said. Other Yanks Bobby Murcer, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig are a few names of other Yankees to have made this same success.

Melky success has been an asset to the Yankees this season and it seems that it sparks things for the team when their down.

Cabrera is not alone as the rest of the team plays as well and that was clearly seen today in the fight. Other than the for a needed win to avoid being swept, with Boston winning in a blow-out game of hits a loss would have cost the Yanks their first place lead.

Burnett and Sabathia have struggled their last starts but the bats finally lifted CC today. These are the Yankees that are in first place, not the ones from the three losses before.

Joba is looking like a different pitcher so maybe his dad brought him back down to reality. Someone let him into the fact of where his career was heading cause Joba has the ability to be extraordinary.

Hopefully the team will get back on track with the win today. The first two games lost to Chicago were lost on errors which is frustrating to watch as a fan, so I am sire the players were kicking themselves after the game.

With Boston on the recharged this will be a fight to the end and the better team will win. I will stick to what I have said all season, that Tampa Bay will be in this race again.

The Yankees were sent a pretty clear message. That is……don’t get too comfortable in first place in the AL East because Boston and a creeping bunch of Rays are watching. This seems to be more like the theme of the toughest division in baseball.

Yanks got a reminder and it was a comforting to see them respond right away.

Tonight: Yankees Lost To The Devils

Maybe, it’s only reasoning I can conclude for the sloppy mess of a game I stayed up to watch. It has to be a mental issue with the Yankees losing for years to the Angels.

Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrerowere not even playing as both are on the DL. So as I replay all the reasons it is just getting worse and I am trying not to let it scare me, yet.
Ever since I can remember, no matter what kind of season the Yanks finish with, the club cannot beat the Los Angeles Angels. Every season the two teams play each other I expect the worst and tonight that is what I got, for sure.

I am almost speechless as the first inning was promising. The Yankee bats ripped into the Angels right away. I could only think, wow this team is really, really good and not going to stop for even the Angels. I actually prefer and refer to this LA club as the “devils”.

For fans, players, managers or any other unfortunate soul linked to my Yankees that have to witness this match-up it is not comforting at all. The ‘Devils’ work better for me as a Yankees fan as I go into a dark place when we get beaten year after year after year by this ball-club.Embarrassing, oh you bet it was. Errors are unacceptable and what a time to mess up textbook plays. I guess the best word to use would be sloppy.

It was 5-1 when the fifth inning began and I started to become confident watching the Yanks. All of a sudden Joba became completely undone. This youngster has to go longer into games and start to figure out why he is getting worse. First it was at home he struggled but was an ace on the road. Welcome to the new “Joba Rules” in which rule one states ‘if Joba starts to decline burn the original rule book, figure out what has happened and fix it.’
