Javier Vazquez Wins And New York Yankee Fans Shut-Up

The day was April 14, 2010, the second home game of the season.

The Yankees were the reigning 2009 World Series champions, making New York glow with pride. Yankee fans’ subdued looks of unfamiliarity from 2009 were replaced with smiles because our new house felt like a home.

At least that is how I felt that Wednesday afternoon, until the game started.

The Yankees were hosts to the Los Angeles Angels, so as the home team took the field my cheers were silenced with booing, cursing as if the season were over already.

As I sat down in confusion, which was more like a polite denial, my heart sank as I knew what was happening. My dad was on my left and initially he was not as affected by the whole situation.

So, I stood up again, and cheered. To be more specific, I was rooting for starting pitcher Javier Vazquez. Vazquez was acquired in the offseason, but it was his second time in pinstripes.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

Vazquez was a Yankee back in 2004, the year the Boston Red Sox broke a World Series curse dating back to 1918. Vazquez had been phenomenal the first half of the season and was voted an AL All-Star by fans.

Vazquez struggled in the second half of the season, but the anger was based on Game Seven of the 2004 ALCS when Vazquez came in to replace Kevin Brown and gave up a grand slam to then-Red Sox Johnny Damon.

It was so ridiculous and immature that Yankees fans were living that far in the past. The 2004 ALCS was lost way before Game Seven. The whole team fell apart, considering they were up three games to none and the Red Sox came back to win the next four and the World Series. Rays, Red Sox, Yankees One Team Has Got To Go

Timing is everything, especially in the American League East.

It will no doubt come down to the last second with an end result with either the Rays, Red Sox or Yankees deeming 2010 a complete wash-out.

Where are the three best teams in MLB currently standing?

  1. New York Yankees 52-31
  2. Tampa Bay Rays      50-33
  3. Boston Red Sox 49-35

Personally, an old-school ALCS would be mucho appreciated and I am not alone in my sentiments.

It does not get much better than Red Sox vs. Yankees that is a fact.

Problem is the Tampa Bay Rays are on the move and things are heating up for this talented ball-club.

Maybe it is just me, but the Rays make me cringe. Nothing is more unsightly for a team just to be talents, entitled and lazy individuals, which is the Rays in a nutshell.

One lesson I learned earlier this season was not to count out the Boston Red Sox. Even with 10 players on a DL list that reads Ellibury, Pedroia, Buchholz, Beckett and Martinez do not underestimate the Red Sox.

The day I first counted out the Red Sox within two weeks my foot was in my mouth. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is the master at fixing things. Epstein has proven himself, so all hail to the Red Sox organization without question.

Back to being a Yankees fan, it is easy to forget that the Bombers are a second-half team. Always exploding in July and August, but getting there is the tricky part. The ups and downs are ones that Dr. Phil and Oprah can’t even dissect. Continue reading ‘Rays, Red Sox, Yankees One Team Has Got To Go’ »

Remember You Are The Champs

Never thought the day would happen when a Boston Red Sox win would feel happy. Well it did tonight, as the Red Sox beat the Rays 6-1, in Tampa Bay.

As a Yankees fan, it was reassuring considering the 180 degree turn the group has taken for the worse.

Just ten days ago, the Red Sox had a similar look that the Yankees seemed to have caught.

Just look at the AL East standings from May 15. 2010 to today:

Preview/Prediction Yankees vs. Red Sox

Facts are the Yankees are coming in nicked-up, missing Curtis Gradnerson, Chan-ho Park, Andy Pettitte at least for his next start, Rivera is available but proceeding with caution, Arod knee is sore, and Posada is DTD, as nothing about tonight has been confirmed.

The Yankees are coming off a lovely home stand winning 5 of 6 games, but the Red Sox need these wins to get over .500 and out of fourth place.

Since the embarrassment sweep by the horrifically poor Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox have come back with a vengeance. As they took the Angels for four in a row with their own brooms, scoring 36 runs in total.

Big Pappi is hitting balls finally, but it is Kevin Youkolis and Dustin Pedoria that are the keys for the team’s success. Continue reading ‘Preview/Prediction Yankees vs. Red Sox’ »

Yankees Are Starting A Tough Three Weeks

Tonight, up in Fenway Park is the beginning of a 17-game stretch for New York Yankees.

Before their next off-day, Yankees face the Boston Red Sox for five games, four games against the Tigers in Detroit, three against the 1st seat Twins, two against Tampa Bay Rays and last three games over the bridge in Citi-field for the Subway Series.

The Tigers are hot right now, and the Twins and Rays are both in first place.

The Red Sox cannot be counted out because when the rivals face each other it is a war that cannot be predicted.

Finally, the Mets have found life again but New York City is all pinstripes that will not change quickly. The Mets had to start somewhere. The Empire State Building donned in blue and orange would get the ball rolling.

By the time the Yanks go to Subway Series, let’s hope the injuries are not worse.

Yankee youngsters’ led by Cano, Gardner, Pena, Cervelli, Chamberlain and Hughes have done the job well so far, but can they maintain is the case looming.

In 17-days we will see the answers, as for now the Champions hold the opportunity to explain.

Yankees Are Winning But Starting To Hurt

Brooms came out in the Bronx today, as the New York Yankees took the O’s 7-5 for the third win of the series.

Since arriving home, the Bombers have won 5 of 6 games, adding two more series wins and raising the term total to eight. The Yankees did not accomplish this without any casualties along the way.

Injuries:

  • Granderson will miss least a month; my guess second week of June.
  • Posada getting reevaluated today, May 6th but hoping available this weekend.
  • Park is expected to return within a week.
  • the latest addition Andy Pettitte. Left today’s game in the fifth with a stiff left elbow. MRI confirmed mild swelling in his pitching elbow.

Honorable mentions going to Arod and Rivera, which can be blamed on a sore knee and stiff side respectively.

Both stars said to be ready on Friday when the Yankees arrive for a series against their rival Boston Red Sox. It is revolting to assume the affects a double blow like this could have. It would undoubtedly cripple the team. Hopefully just a sneak-peak of some early season cautions.

The only confirmed fact…this is not good.

It was exceedingly sweet of Girardi and people for trying to minimize the apparent absentees on the field. Understandably, with the names involved alarm would take to pandemonium real fast in New York.

Now fans will follow with extra nervousness, praying that nothing else happens.

The realization of time has been easy to avoid, but their lasting successes do not make than immortal. Something Yankee fans don’t, won’t and can’t even comprehend surviving without them.

For any team, injuries turn into nightmares real fast. Blame it on sports because remaining healthy is so unpredictable, but inevitable at the same time.

The worst trend seen in baseball is that players getting hurt can become like dominos, causing a team’s success to collapse right along side.

The impact is already applicable for the Yanks, starting with Pettitte missing his start at Fenway. Pettitte has been nothing short of phenomenal thus far, with four wins in five starts, 2.08 ERA, with 27 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched.

What a HUGE opportunity for Javier Vazquez to step it up, as most likely his scratched start to be erased. The who and where (Red Sox and Fenway Park) are ridiculous lucky timing if Vazquez can do it together and win.

My theory is that Girardi would put Vazquez back to start on Friday, followed by Hughes, CC etc. It would make sense to keep the original order too.

Vazquez will not see many Yankees fans at Fenway Park. From personal experience I can guarantee any pinstripes in Boston will not be loud and every Yankee will be getting boo’s.

Here it is on a silver platter, “VAZQUEZ WINS ONE FOR ANDY!” That headline has a pleasant ring to it and promises that cheers will arise for Vazquez if he can shut down the beasts. Continue reading ‘Yankees Are Winning But Starting To Hurt’ »

Javier Vazquez: Top 3 New Targets For Yankee Hater-Fans

At Yankee Stadium, tolerance for the Hater-Fans is low. They are crass, loud, annoying, distracting individuals who’s loyalties are always in question.

Hater-Fan’s are at every and any sporting event. It is part of the experience, and you learn to ignore them; that is until it is effecting the players.

For Javier Vazquez, landing back in the Bronx during a Hater-Fan dry-spell, after Arod left them in the dust, is unfortunate timing. In essence, Vazquez is their savior.

Vazquez makes his third start on Tuesday against the Oakland A’s, and he needs to be solid. Vazquez is across the country, miles away from the Yankee Hater-Fan negativity and distraction.

Other Yankee Fans have high hopes that the separation works in his favor.

So what are the Hater-Fans going to do if Vazquez is successful during this road trip? Continue reading ‘Javier Vazquez: Top 3 New Targets For Yankee Hater-Fans’ »
