Pitching Match-Up Of Week: New York Yankees Vs. Cleveland Indians

After splitting the first two games in Cleveland against the Indians, the New York Yankees have shorten their lead in the AL East to just two games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays are on fire right now. SP Matt Garza pitched the franchise’s first no-hitter on Monday night against the Tigers and followed it up with another win. The Rays have won their last four in a row.

After two more games against a beat-up Tigers team, in come the Yankees. The question is will the two teams be tied for first place or can the Yankees win the next two in Cleveland?

Tonight’s game the Yankees fate is at the hands of SP AJ Burnett, who faces Indians ace Fausto Carmona.

Let’s look at the two hurlers and how they fair against each other on the mound:

Cleveland Indians Fausto Carmona:

26 year-old Fausto Carmona is the staff ace. He impressed Yankees skipper Joe Girardi so much he named him to the 2010 All-Star roaster just a few weeks ago.

In the month of July, Carmona has a 3-1 record, a 2.81 ERA, giving up just eight runs, one home-run and has struck-out 17 batters. Carmona’s walk rate for the month is 14, which is clearly the right-hander’s weakness.

Two of the three July wins were against the tough Tampa Bay Rays and the other vs. the Detroit Tigers. Both opposing teams legitimately feature the best hitters in the league, aka. Cabrera, Crawford, Longoria to just name a few. Continue reading ‘Pitching Match-Up Of Week: New York Yankees Vs. Cleveland Indians’ »

New York Yankees Sweep A’s But Double Trouble In Seattle

The New York Yankees brought their brooms out West, as the Bombers easily swept the Oakland Athletics for three-games. Pitching set the tome, as Javy, AJ and Sabathia all were phenomenal in their starts.

The timing could not be better as the Yankees head to Seattle for four-games against the Mariners.

In case Yankee fans forgot on purpose, the Mariners were just in the Bronx a week ago. Trust me, never facing the Mariners one-two knockout of Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez ever again would have been fine with me.

Lee and King Felix totally massacred the Yankee bats last week. It was not pretty, or fun for Yankee fans to watch because it was that scary.

For a group who can’t score runs, the Mariners have certainly found the perfect solution. Putting Lee and the King on the mound is a guaranteed relief for the Mariner bats.

This makes today’s game a must win for the Yankees because double trouble starts are slated for Friday and Saturday’s games.

The Yankees best pitcher in these situations is on the mound tonight. Do I even need to type the name Andy Pettitte? Continue reading ‘New York Yankees Sweep A’s But Double Trouble In Seattle’ »

Alex Rodriguez Sticks It To Grandma In Oakland

Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden is famous for being protective of his pile of dirt. Especially if you trot over it on your way off the field.

Just ask Alex Rodriguez about the fit Braden threw in the A’s dugout. He was in total outrage over Arod taking the shorter way over his beloved mass. Braden threw his glove, kicked some cups that still had water in them and cursed like a truck driver.

Guess that fact that Arod was right there, in the A’s stadium, his house was just not an option. Hey it was the next best thing than challenging Arod to his face.

Do not forget, Braden also threw a perfect game on 05.09.2010 but has not done much of anything since. Like win another game. Braden only had six strikeouts that day, but it was against the Tampa Bay Rays and they are legit.

Now, the New York Yankees are back for three games in Oakland in Dallas Braden’s house. Arod is now there for the taking.

If I were Arod, I would assume that route back to the dugout again

Why not?

Sticking it to his Grandma is good enough reason. No older respectable woman needs to talk like that or at least add some curse words to look like real white trash.

Go figure that Braden is on the DL with elbow stiffness. He has thrown bullpen sessions. One would think this would be a series Braden would not miss unless his Grandma cut off his arm.

The A’s are even trying to profit from that April 22 jog. Selling festive historic t-shirts that read, “Get off my mound.” Continue reading ‘Alex Rodriguez Sticks It To Grandma In Oakland’ »

Phil Hughes, Joe Girardi And The Da Boom Theory

Once again, the New York Yankees fell victim to their own rules.

Last night, the result ended with a Yankees loss of 7-4 to the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners have consistently held the last spot in the AL West this season.

The Mariners had baseball‘s best pitcher on the mound Cliff Lee to face a well-rested Phil Hughes.

Hughes has exceeded all expectations this season and entered the game with a 10-1 record, an ERA of 3.17 and has been the most consistent on the Yankees rotation.

No question that Hughes is the real deal, but at 24 years old the Yankees worry about using him too much.

Hughes just turned 24, and this is his second full season in the bigs, first as a full-time starter. So, the Yankees place an innings limit on him, also known as the Hughes Rules.

Innings limit on young arms is the latest thing around baseball. I was under the impression it was used when a pitcher was transitioning from the minors.

Looking at pitching sensation Steven Strasbourg of the Washington Nationals, it makes sense. The Nats manager was upfront that Strasbourg was allowed to pitch for 120 innings in 2010, no matter what.

Strasbourg is clear on this rule, along with everyone who watches Sports-center. It is extremely helpful, especially from a young player’s mental outlook. Continue reading ‘Phil Hughes, Joe Girardi And The Da Boom Theory’ »

Baseball Finally Got Some Respect

Accomplishments, both professionally and personally, are the most gratifying events that inspire us to keep on doing our best.

Sometimes you can get so close to a goal, you can taste it. As disappointing as life can be, if you tried your best no one is going to judge you.

In regards to professional sports, the road is not always so easy because another person holds all the power. It can be a judge, referee, umpire etc. that has the task of implementing the rules of the game.

Truth is that we are all-human and make countless mistakes, because the way I might see it, might not be what actually happened.

Everyone’s emotions involved are crazy. Imagine that you just made history, only to have it taken away simply because someone saw it differently.

As the world now knows, this happened in MLB this past Wednesday night.

It was about to be a perfect game; the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, and an easy play at first. Wait, the runner is  called safe.

It was the wrong call and everyone saw it, but the umpire. To say my stomach dropped would be an understatement, as my heart went out to the rookie pitcher.

The umpire was Jim Joyce and the pitcher was the Detroit Tiger’s Armando Galarraga.

I was ready for Galarraga to go up and punch Joyce in the face, and it would have been fine by me. Continue reading ‘Baseball Finally Got Some Respect’ »

MLB: Two Teams To Watch

It is not even June, but when a division has three or more good teams it is imperative to stay very close behind, if not on top. It is easier to fall out of the race than realized.

Some of these smaller market baseball teams might not be media favorites, but have the potential to be serious contenders down the road.

Here are two NL teams that might be overlooked unfairly, but are dynamic enough to be a threat come October:

COLORADO ROCKIES:

The Rockies are not a suave ballclub by any means, but they are fighters.

This team wants to win, after losing their only World Series in 2007; the Rockies have not stopped trying to get back there. The team has the right attitude that will keep October within their reach.

Currently, winning four in a row and creeping up behind the Dodgers and the Padres.

This ballclub has the best pitcher in baseball, Ubaldo Jimenez, who has .88 ERA and 9 wins. Jimenez seems to only be getting better and if Rockies are playing in October, they will be very tough.

Don’t be surprised if Colorado takes the lead by the All-Star break, but if not I would be surprised if they were more than a game or two behind. Continue reading ‘MLB: Two Teams To Watch’ »

Baseball Basics: Statistical Basics

Hey newbie fans, hopefully by now you have started to grasp the basics of baseball.

Now with the season in full swing, you newbies should be ready for the next question. This has been asked a few times over the last week.

Baseball Basics Question:

WHAT STATISICS DO ALL THE ABBREVIATIONS STAND FOR?”

Batters and pitchers both have their own set of statistics. To make it easier, I have two separate posts, one for batting and the other for pitching. Continue reading ‘Baseball Basics: Statistical Basics’ »
