New York Yankees: Couldn’t Get A Loss When Honoring The Boss

New York Yankees are finally home in the Bronx.

Monday night opened a four game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Before the start of the game, the Yankees honored owner George Steinbrenner, who passed away on July 13th, which ironically was the same day of the All-Star Game.

The ceremony was surreal, as the Yankees escorted the entire Steinbrenner Family along with Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Joe Torre, Don Mattingly and MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to Monument Park to unveil a statue in honor of the Boss.

A tribute played on the center field screen that brought fans to tears. Mr. Steinbrenner was not just the Yankees boss; he was New York’s boss.

A man who lived to give to others but held the personal motto that “the greatest form of charity is anonymity.”

Watching the current Yankees walk in a united group out to center field was perfect.

Seeing Torre and Mattingly was overwhelming for both the fans and the two ex-Yankees. There were only cheers, as an entire stadium was chanting the loudest “Let’s Go Yankees” ever heard.

It was perfect start, followed by the only appropriate ending, a Yankee win.

Winning on Monday night wasn’t for the playoffs, or to stay in first place it was for the Boss who made winning the Yankee way.

Here are some pictures from the memorable ceremony for the greatest Yankee ever, Mr. George Steinbrenner III:

Rays Sweep But Yankees Not Gonna Weep

The Tampa Bay Rays are scary.

The team is young, fast and has talent.

The last two nights it was all Tampa Bay Rays, as they took both games in the Bronx.

Are they better than the New York Yankees?

When the Yanks are all well, my answer is no.

Just a month ago down in Tampa Bay the Yankees were healthy, and they took two of three games from the Rays.

This is not the same Yankees team, and they still made the Rays earn both wins.

Finding flaws are far and few between looking at the Tampa Bay Rays roaster.

Their biggest weapon is speed. Whether it is at the plate, on base or in the field, this group hustles and distracts opposing players.

Still, the Rays inexperience was evident last season. There is so much baseball left to be, and things can change much faster than people realize.

Rays skipper Joe Madden has an aura about him that I am not to fond off, but need more time to figure out why. What he did so effectively in 2008, but downright flopped in 2009 with the same team tells me something is just not right.

Attitudes need to stay in check.

Tonight when Tex picked off Jason Bartlett on a signature Pettitte fake-out move, he looked half asleep out there. Bartlett is fast as hell, and if he had a reason to be ready he would have been. Continue reading ‘Rays Sweep But Yankees Not Gonna Weep’ »

Yankees Did Not Lose They Got Beat

I was not a devoted fan tonight.

I left the New York Yankees game in the seventh inning, as the Tampa Bay Rays were up 6-2 and Boone Logan was jogging to the mound.

The Yankees looked tired. This does sound like an excuse, which it completely is but it is still a fact. The Boston Red Sox were just in town, meaning games are intense, long and both Monday and Tuesday’s tactics were no different. Both went down to the wire and last night they played till around 1am.

At the same time, the Tampa Bay Rays provide a full-court press on the Yankees. This group pushes and pushes stealing six bases tonight off AJ Burnett, who has only allowed six this season.

Burnett got beat tonight; as the Rays are abundant everywhere and the fourth inning topped the cake with a result of 6-0, Rays.

It was not completely Burnett’s fault. The Rays could see Burnett’s pitches from the get-go, and they utilized on it.

The bottom line is the Rays out played the Yankees, I saw it with my own eyes, and I could not watch it anymore.

Leaving the game was a better option, even though I listened on the subway as Logan did exactly what I thought he would do. Continue reading ‘Yankees Did Not Lose They Got Beat’ »

Yankees Test Starts Wednesday

Starting a 19-game run last week, the New York Yankees looked to be in trouble coming off a miserable road trip.

Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez were not hitting at all, add that to the growing list of injuries, and you have the temperament of darn nifty pity party.

Blame it entirely on being homesick because once the Yankees got back to the Bronx on Friday night the team came back to life.

Beating the AL Central first place Minnesota Twins for two of three games, the Yankees, as a group, looked determined and nothing was going to stop them.

The Yankees continue this difficult period in their agenda by welcoming the hated Red Sox to town for two games.

The Red Sox are in fourth place, behind the surprisingly competitive Toronto Blue Jays. These two games are the Yankees to take, and helps them training for the games that follow.

After the Red Sox, the most crucial wins for the Yankees come Wednesday and Thursday, with the arrival of the Tampa Bay Rays.

As a Yankees fan, I am sick and tired of hearing about the Tampa Bay Rays.

No denying the Rays are a formidable team. They currently lead the Yankees in the AL East standings and retain young, mega-talented players all around. Continue reading ‘Yankees Test Starts Wednesday’ »

Yankees Attitudes Are Contagious

Coming home never felt so right for the New York Yankees.

Tonight’s win, against the 1st place Minnesota Twins, was especially needed, as the Yanks have been away 22 of 34 games. The team was taking a beating, as the injury list was rivaling their active roaster.

Clearly, the Yankees were struggling.

As fans flooded onto the 4-train, the air filled with talk of how coming home was all the team needed to get back on their feet.

This mentality has worked in the past, and the Yankee fans determined to make it happen again.

The fans, including myself, cheered our hearts out. It was not easy as the first three innings featured strikeouts from Jeter, Tex, Cano, Swisher, Cervelli and not even runners on base to strand.

Unlike in the past, there was no booing at all, no silence either, only chanting from fans all around the packed stadium.

The players will tell you how pleasant it felt, but it was Brett Gardner that gave the group spirit again.

Gardner’s homer in the fourth inning got the bats going, but it was his overall determination started to spread like a virus.

In the fifth inning, Twin’s superman Joe Mauer went yard to tie the game at 2-2, but Gardner’s impressive defense made sure no more damage was done.

Bottom of the fifth, with two outs it was Gardner again who hit a single and kept the inning going. Teixeira had to have been inspired to back up his teammate by hitting a double to deep right field. This allowed Gardner to score, and the Yankees were up 3-2.

No joke, the Yankees did not look discouraged any longer. Continue reading ‘Yankees Attitudes Are Contagious’ »
