New York Yankees: Injury updates already

From the start to the end of Spring Training, players are warming-up their bodies to get ready for the 162-game grind of the regular season.

Unfortunately injury setbacks are inevitable, and daily reports sometimes seem endless but also remember that if a player feels anything is off, he will rest as a precautionary measure.

You can see the most up-to-date injury reports, team-by-team by visiting ESPN Injury Updates ; that is what I do many times daily.

So, here are the early setbacks that have already hit the New York Yankees, courtesy of ESPN: Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Injury updates already’ »

New York Yankees hot stove: You want the down-low on Russell Branyan

English: Russell Branyan

Image via Wikipedia

Since six-time Gold Glover Eric Chavez seems to be AWOL, at least on the New York Yankees radar, GM Brian Cashman is up to his old tricks and I don’t mean off the field.

Once again Cashman is handing out minor league deals and 2012 Spring Training invites, and the latest recipient, according to the New York Post, is 37-year old Russell Branyan.

The left-handed batting Branyan can play in the outfield, and at first and third base if he makes the team this spring. The latest team Branyan got released from was the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the rest of his 14 MLB seasons reads like a bad wrap sheet.

Branyan started his career as a Cleveland Indian and from there has played for the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Let me just say that this signing makes me think that Cashman is really pushing his luck, or is not thinking clearly.

Last season, Branyan split time between playing first and third base for the D-backs and the Angles. Combined, Branyan had 127 at-bats and posted a .197 batting average, five home-runs, 14 RBIs, 18 walks and struck out 41 times. His OBP was a mere .295, while slugging .370 in the 68 games he played in.

In 2010, Branyan did hit 25 homers, with 57 RBIs and 46 walks over 109 at-bats but he also struck out 131 times. This was again while playing for two teams, as the Indians traded Branyan to the Mariners.

This is almost making me sick knowing Chavez is sitting somewhere as a free agent.

The Yankees should not even waste five cents on Branyan, and here are three reasons why:

1) Throughout his career, Branyan has been prone to injuries but not just on the baseball field. One example dating back to late September 2010, while playing for the Mariners, Branyan reportedly injured himself while out a pizza parlor according to NBC Hardball Talk’s Craig Calcaterra. Calcaterra also broke the news when Branyan had injured himself back in July, this time a hotel table hit his foot at 5am. New York Yankees: 8 Headlines You Don’t Want To See In 2012

New York Post - back cover - 11-24-2012

Whether you read it in the local newspaper; watch it on ESPN’s Sportscenter or MLB Network’s Quick Pitch; or hear it on Mad Dog Radio, there are certain words like setback, injury, slump, suspension that a fan immediately knows means trouble.

Not one of the 30 MLB teams is devoid of issues over the course of the 162-game regular season, but the severity can vary and sometimes recovering becomes impossible.

The worst is when a baseball fan is unprepared, as I am all to familiar with those dreadful mornings when open my door to grab my New York Post and bam, the front page is enough to make me sick, literally.

It is always a treat like back in November 2012 when one NYP headline read, PICTURE THIS with Derek Jeter in a Red Sox’s uniform linking to a feature story that the Yankees were going to let the Captain take other offers; and that Boston was coming guns a-blazing. Can you even image?

So, this got me thinking of what Yankee headlines would I NOT want to see in 2012, or ever for that matter? Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: 8 Headlines You Don’t Want To See In 2012’ »

New York Yankees: Psychic Predicts 2012 Bombers To Rise Up

All I can say is thank goodness for the New York Post because if the paper’s latest report is true the 2012 New York Yankees are in for a stellar season.

The feature story in the weekly Pulse pullout titled “It’s Crystal Clear” gives psychics predictions for the upcoming year.

And Yankee fans should be ecstatic if psychic Frank Andrews’s vision stands true:

“I feel that the Yankees will rise up this year. They’re going to prove to everyone, ‘We’re OK,’ and we’re back in the saddle.”

It is noted that Andrews was ‘particularly struck’ by his vision for the pinstripes, as he is the furthest thing from a sports fan; going as far as admitting he does not follow sports at all.

So just who is this Frank Andrews? Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Psychic Predicts 2012 Bombers To Rise Up’ »

New York Yankees: 2012 Resolution That’s Easy

Making a New Year’s resolution is a time-honored tradition, and after going to the gym today I can tell you that it is still done, as it was

jammed packed.

Certain resolutions are irresolvable; such as I will never win a World Series for the obvious reason that I am female. Regardless, the majority of living men in the world today are not even remotely talented enough to play in the minor leagues.

Now the above does not apply if your name is Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez or Mariano Rivera as not only have all three already been WS Champs, they have the opportunity to do it again but the window is closing.

The 2012 New York Yankees won’t look much different from 2011, as most know that this off-season has been lifeless thus far and I do not foresee any surprises prior to the start of Spring Training.

Luckily, the Yankees have the talent to be relevant without much change but with the looming retirement of Rivera, along with the ages of Jeter and A-rod make 2012 the last season that winning a World Series might still be manageable.

I don’t think fans realize what life in the Bronx will be like when Enter Sandman no longer plays at the Stadium in the ninth inning; or in two or three years when the team no longer has their Captain.

The time is now, and after being on-hand for the Game 5 of the 2011 ALDS one would hope that would be enough for the entire Yankee team to work harder this off-season. So at least the players would know that they did everything humanly possible not repeat another early exit again in 2012.

For now, all I hope is that the majority of active Yankee players have this same sentiment. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: 2012 Resolution That’s Easy’ »

New York Yankees: Remembering The Top 6 Headlines From 2011

The New York Yankees and their fans are trying to forget how the 2011 MLB season ended, as losing the ALDS in five games at home was rough on everyone.

Still, with a New Year just days away gives the perfect reason to reflect on the noteworthy, and in 2011 a lot of historic Yankee memories were made.

So, here are the 6 newspaper headlines, some to be etched in Yankee Universe forever, but all had a significant part in the 2011 season; and ones I will never forget:

New York Yankees: Party On Captain

New York Yankees Captain Derek Jeter is having a good ‘old time this off-season, and why the heck not.

As if you didn’t know already, Jeter is single again and slaying chicks all over NYC. And all I can say is party on Captain.

The NY Post’s Emily Smith and Tara Palmeri kindly found some of these women and reported that the Captain’s MO is a lady will “stay with him at his apartment in New York, and then he gets them a car to take them home the next day. Waiting in his car is a gift basket containing signed Jeter memorabilia, usually a signed baseball.”

Wow, I don’t know about any of you ladies but a ride and a present is not such a bad deal considering the circumstances.

You would have to be an idiot to think anything relevant might evolve from throwing the cat around town for a night with a guy who has as many options as Jeter does.

Jumping in the sack with Jeter is not going to make you stand out. And even you can suck a tennis ball through a garden hose, I will bet my life that Jeter has seen it, done it and had better. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Party On Captain’ »
