2012 MLB Power Rankings: Preseason

The 2012 MLB Season has technically already started but since today is the official Opening Day in the states, I deemed it still proper to post my preseason power rankings.

Lady Loves Pinstripes Weekly Power Rankings will be up every Friday, all season long and please note that giving your opinion in a comment is encouraged.

Please note that just because the power rankings are posted weekly does not necessarily mean the rankings are based on that week’s results. For example, if the Astros sweep the Phillies that does not mean the Astros move up to the top 10 teams; nor does it mean the Phillies be moved to the bottom. UNLESS the series is part of a pattern, like if the Astros have swept multiple series in a row, or if the Phillies have lost multiple series in a row.  Catch my drift…I am looking at the bigger picture, and teams will be ranked accordingly.

2012 MLB Team Preview: New York Mets

New York Mets logo.

Since their infamous 2007 collapse, the New York Mets just can’t seem to get a break.

Last season the Mets finished fourth in the NL East winning with a 77-85 record, which is not so bad considering the team was riddled with injuries.

The Mets and their fans have to believe that things will get better as I don’t know what else could go wrong.

So, can Mets fans start believing again or will 2012 prove to be another bust in Queens?

Let’s take a look….

THE POSITIVES:

Skipper Terry Collins could not be more perfect a leader for the Mets. Collins truly believes in the team and he manages with passion. The players respect and want to win for Collins because of the energy he brings day in and day out. As Collins heads into his second season in New York, the Mets will once again look for him to be their guide and he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. As ex-Met Carlos Beltran once said, “He is a good man.”  And the Mets could not be luckier for it.

Welcome back Johan Santana! The Mets finally have their ace back and the even better news is that Santana has looked good in Spring Training. The last time Mets fans saw the two-time CY Young winner was September 2, 2010 so it will be a treat to have him take the mound at Citi-Field on Opening Day vs. the Braves. If Santana stays healthy and is pitching like he is capable, the Mets have a certified star at the top of their rotation again and he will win games.

Also take note that first baseman Ike Davis is back too after missing almost all of 2011; and this kid can rake. Baring that his ankle holds up and his Valley Fever doesn’t become an issue look for a big year from a seriously talented Davis.

2012 MLB Team Preview: Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals Logo

As the Washington Nationals head into their eighth season, they finally have something to get excited about.

What started last off-season by signing Jason Werth, the ownership has continued that they want this team wants to contend now.

The franchise’s best divisional finish was in 2011, as they placed third place in the NL East with an 80-81 record just a game short of .500. The Nats did go 81-81 in 2005, but that was only good enough for last place that season.

Even though the Nationals have brought little success, the organization seems to be headed in the right direction but is it enough for the team to compete in 2012? Or is it another season of continual rebuilding?

THE POSITIVES:

Being the worst is finally paying-off…. Since becoming the Nationals in 2005, the team has been the literal bottom feeders of the NL East, until finishing in third last season. From 2008-2010 the team only won a combined 187 games, which did give the Nationals a lot first round draft picks and now the results are starting to emerge.

The Nationals starting rotation has much improved by trading for Gio Gonzalez and signing Edwin Jackson in addition to Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman.

Gonzalez is coming off a great 2011 with the Oakland Athletics, as he went 16-12, with a 3.12 ERA and those numbers should get better coming from the AL.  As for Jackson, who inked a one-year deal with the Nationals, is presumably hoping to hit the free agent market again following 2012, so expect him to want to perform as best he can. Last season he went 12-9 splitting time between the White Sox and the Cardinals, and pitched just shy of 200 innings.

The Nationals bullpen was already good with duo Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen but they went out and solidified it by signing now ex-Phillies closer Brad Lidge. This should pose for few problems at the end of the games, and having a solid group of relievers is so vital for a team down the stretch; and especially since it takes pressure off the starters a bit, which the Nats can benefit from.

A New York Yankees Fan Take On Mets Losing Reyes To Marlins

The New York Mets ownership could take a lesson from the their neighbors in the Bronx.

A team doesn’t let their best player go without a fight, but when your owner is broke and too selfish to sell a team he can’t afford, guess who is going to suffer?

The team, and that is exactly what happened to the Mets when the news broke via FOX’s Ken Rosenthal tweet that shortstop Jose Reyes signed a 6-year, $106 million contract with the Miami Marlins, pending a physical.

Mets fans will be livid with this news and knowing that no offer was even on the table to Reyes in the first place, but what could they really expect.

See, when current Mets GM Sandy Alderson took the job last off-season, owner Fred Wilpon was still an upstanding citizen with a lot of money.

Now Wilpon is broke, with a pending lawsuit against him for being involved in his childhood buddy Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

In essence, leaving the Mets and Alderson hogged tied with zero money to spend; but according to a recent article I read on Mets Merized Online this was not a surprise for Alderson, as he knew this coming into the job.

Still, regardless of the Mets financial history, it doesn’t change that their best player has gone to a division rival; along with the promises Wilpon made to give Mets fans a winning team, which is clear by the payroll being lowered to under $100 million.

To a fan this just seems like more lies out of a selfish man’s mouth. Continue reading ‘A New York Yankees Fan Take On Mets Losing Reyes To Marlins’ »

Red Sox Hire Bobby Valentine

Red Sox Nation

If you had not heard yet, ex-New York Mets skipper, turned ESPN analyst Booby Valentine has been named the new GM of the Boston Red Sox.

Valentine will have his hands full in Beantown, as he will have to crackdown on the Red Sox players who preferred hosting keg parties and eating fired chicken to cheering on their teammates.

Valentine knows that Boston fans are still stewing, and rightly so considering the level of betrayal they felt by their beloved Red Sox.

Luckily for Valentine, ringleader and pitcher John Lackey is already out for the entire 2012 season. Lackey was deemed injured about a week after the September collapse. The Red Sox declared that Lackey needed Tommy John surgery, which approximately has a 12-15 month recovery. Continue reading ‘Red Sox Hire Bobby Valentine’ »

New York Yankees Hot Stove: Cashman Signs Mets Lefty Reliever

According to Jon Heyman at SI tweeted that the New York Yankees have signed 31-year old, lefty reliever Mike O’Connorto what my

NEW YORK, NY - JULY 08: General manager Brian...

guess is a minor league deal.

O’Connor pitched 6.2 innings for the New York Mets last season, where he gave-up five hits, two earned runs, three walks and struck out eight batters. Before that O’Connor had not seen a MLB ballpark since 2008 and for good reason after giving up 13 earned runs in nine innings.

This pick-up will not be the first of its kind this off-season, as GM Brian Cashman ran into some serious good fortune last year when he took a chance on Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia.

These signings can be very alarming when you look at guys, like O’Connor’s numbers.

Unlike last year, Yankee fans can’t deem Cashman headed for the loony -bin again, because whether it was genius or luck that led to success doesn’t really matter because it worked.

So, for now I will keep my mouth shut but for how long I cannot promise, especially if Cashman goes on a desperation run again.

I can’t help but point out that signing any Met player that was kept in the minors except for six innings does not seem to wise EVER!!
