New York Yankees: Why ALDS Game 5 Was A Total Bust

Well, ALDS Game 5 was a complete bust for the New York Yankees losing 3-2 to the Tigers at home.

I was at the game and it was heartbreaking, and frustrating at the same time watching how many Yankees were left-on-base. Twice the bases were loaded with only one out and the Yankees got blanked.

The Yankees can stew all off-season about how they screwed this one up. Personally, I need a day or two to let this one sink in, and hope for the best.

New York Yankees Rumors: Go To Starbucks And CC Sabathia To The Phillies

Every afternoon, I hit up Starbucks for my midday coffee fix and today was no different.

As I waited for my triple-skim-grande-wet cappuccino with an extra shot, the part time manager was behind the machines and he happens to be a huge Seattle Mariners fan, as well as a stats guru.

Having our normal banter, I told him how good young ace Michael Pineda looked and was surprised that he had no innings limit for the rest of 2011.

Also, I said that in if Seattle could trade for a legit, big bat they could win the AL West. He agreed completely, but was happy that I took notice.

As he handed me my drink, we are going back and forth about pitching, he remark about how stellar CC Sabathia has been. I concurred, and went on to ramble about how lucky the Yankees were to have Sabathia.

That is until I heard this angry voice behind me say, “Sabathia is not a good pitcher, not even close.”

In complete shock I spun around to see a larger woman glaring at me with a Philadelphia Phillies lanyard around her neck.

Rarely am I ever at a loss for words, but in this instance I froze. The woman didn’t stop, as she continued on her crusade.

“Sabathia stinks in the Post Season, like he did in 2009. He is not good at all.”

My shock quickly turned to anger, “Do you not remember 2009??? FYI.. Your Phillies are not the ones with the World Series rings.”

Not responding to my question, this Philly fan went on a tangent, “Sabathia is gone after this year anyway because he is going to become a free agent and go elsewhere. He wants to leave too for more money.” Continue reading ‘New York Yankees Rumors: Go To Starbucks And CC Sabathia To The Phillies’ »

New York Yankees Rumors: Alex Rodriguez Injuries Mount

It was impossible to miss New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez’s especially slow stride in the third inning during Saturday’s 8-3 win vs. the Colorado Rockies.

As Yankee fans gasp in fright at what looked to be their worst nightmare unfolding right in front of them, another injury to the team’s cleanup hitter.

See, just a week ago an anonymous clubhouse attendant spilled some hush-hush news to ESPN New York’s Wallace Matthews, that A-rod was suffering from a left shoulder injury.

As the news broke back on June 20th, the Yankees immediately went into defensive mode. In typical fashion, manager Joe Girardi did what he is supposed to do and using phrases like “nothing serious” and “just sore” when asked about the his best hitters condition.

As the day went on, A-rod disclosed this problem dated back early May in a game down in Texas against the Rangers and has had treatment on it ever since.

Still, A-rod kept stuck with his original explanation:

“It’s not bad. It’s like what I told you guys out there, just normal soreness.”

Now back to this past Saturday.

Unless he runs on his hands, A-rod’s slow gallop off that third-inning double indicated that another body part was feeling some pain.

Following the Yankees 8-3 win, MLB.com’s Matt Fortuna tweeted that A-rod had a sore right knee and had dealt with it since last Sunday night in Chicago.

So, the same night A-rod’s shoulder gets revealed, he also met another injury to his right knee.

A-rod acknowledged the problem and had this to say to the New York Daily News:

“It’s getting better. There are some injuries you can play through and some you can’t. This one is one I feel like I can play through.”

This is starting to sound like a broken record over in Yankee camp, and one the fans have heard many a time out of the players and coaches mouths.

In A-rod’s specific case, the limping made it way to noticeable so what other choice did they have but to blame it on A-rod’s prone for bruising.

Anything other than a lack for going deep, this last week A-rod posted 10 hits, eight RBIs, four doubles, two walks and posting a batting average of .556.

Regardless of how bad things really are for A-Rod, he is still a vital producer in the Yankees line-up.

If A-rod’s status goes from bruised to DL stint, things will get ugly really fast.

No matter if you are an A-rod hater or lover, fact remains that the team is better when he plays. So losing A-rod for a game, two, or three, is better than what could wind up being weeks.

All of Yankees universe will be keeping an eye on the situation because with every new revelation things are only growing worse.

Let’s just pray that no other injury rumors about A-rod bruising come to surface this week and that the road to recovery is working and not just prolonging the unavoidable.

New York Yankees: Playing Small Works Out Big To Win Subway Series In Bronx

The Subway Series and New York City bragging rights were at stake on Sunday afternoon, as the outcome of the rubber match between the Yankees and Mets got decided in one heck of a 7th inning up in the Bronx:

  • Entering the 7th inning, the Yankees were down 3-1 to the Mets, with no real signs of hope.
  • The one on the scoreboard came off another Curtis Granderson home-run in the 1st inning, but otherwise it was the same old stranding runners-on-base.
  • The Captain came up clutch with a double that drove in the two runs that tied the game 3-3.
  • Curtis Granderson has 16 home-runs, but the guy is just lethal with the bat period. His sacrifice bunt was perfectly knocked down the third-base line, setting up the go-ahead-run.
  • After the Mets walked Mark Teixeira, A-Rod hit a blooper that but ran his heart out and the meager hit was enough for the run to score to put the Yankees on top.
  • 13 Yankees hitters produced five singles, two walks, one double, and a sacrifice in this brilliant inning of small-ball.
  • Not one of the total eight runs scored in 7th came off a home-run.

Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reported that was the inning the Yankees have been looking for according to A-Rod who he quoted saying:

“There were a lot of good things that happened in that inning, starting with Gardy, and Dickerson drew a nice walk, a perfect base hit by Jeter and a perfect bunt by Granderson. That sets up the big inning and those are the things we haven’t been doing the last few weeks. We can’t hit a three-run homer every time.”

The Mets only managed to score three runs off the 11 total hits they had off Yankees rookie Ivan Nova.

The Yankees beat the Mets 9-3, taking the rubber game and the series 2-1.

Now Yankee fans can look toward the Empire State Building, as it will be glowing of pinstripes for the next few nights.

Subway Series: Yankees vs. Mets Back In The New York Groove

Branded as the Big Apple and the Capital of the World, New York City is undeniably a very extraordinary place.

As a real New Yorker (born in Manhattan), I can say that when it comes to our city’s pro-sports teams it would be a challenge to find a more prideful and demanding bunch of fans.

New York fans have earned a reputation for a win or get-off the pot attitude, which has made our sports teams less popular everywhere else.

So, when two New York teams face-off, like the Mets and Yankees will in the Subway Series this weekend, it is a fight for the city’s pride.

Here is a little “New York Groove” slideshow of random Yankee pictures, by ladylove pinstripes.com….enjoy!

The victor of this three game set get to gloat because the Empire State Building will adorn the colors of that team for all to see.

For a Mets fan, winning the Subway Series provides the last shred of superiority over the big, bad and successful Yankees.

The Yankees have owned the NYC for over a decade, but that comes with as many haters as it does fans. That doesn’t mean that winning the Subway Series is not a meaningful because it is not just another series.

Someone just said to me that it is another b-l-e-e-p for the Yankees to add to their ever-growing list of successes, but as a New Yorker when your team wins you get to walk with your head a little higher come Monday morning.

As the Yankees return to the Bronx after winning three of four games on the road, they are feeling pretty confident as they prepare to host their cross-town rivals from Queens.

With bragging rights up for grabs, everyone in New York will be busting out their caps, t-shirts and jerseys with their loyalty proudly on full-display.

Even though the Yankees have a much better team on paper, the 2011 Mets are finally heading in the right direction after years of going backwards.

Mets fans know they have a good team; with an inspiriting new skipper and a GM who is determined to get the franchise back to the top.

The Subway Series’ are never short on drama, and if you want to see New York’s spirit at its peak going to the Subway Series is a darn good example of it.

There is a reason the New York Times referred to the Subway Series as “George Steinbrenner’s personal World Series.”

Pitching previews to follow…..

New York Yankees: The Not So Evil Empire

The media has always made the New York Yankees payroll a focal point for criticizing the franchise for, in truth, their generous wallets.

So, after reading the recent article by Ronald Blum of the NY Post about how Yankees Alex Rodriguez is earning a paycheck that is just shy of the entire payroll of the Kansas City Royals, it got me thinking.…

This topic is not anything new for Yankee fans or anyone for that matter, but just as the media thrives on reminding people why to resent the Yankees, fans like myself need to let you know the truth.

The fact is the Yankees reputation is based on famously over-paying players, that are undeserving and overrated. The Yankee haters claim they grab the best of whatever the current baseball market has to offer, and unfairly presenting individuals with monster contracts that are impossible to match or to decline.

This way of thinking made me feel sorry for the literally poor Royals, as their lack of success was being hampered by their own abilities to offer only petty paychecks. This makes it seem that what is just one player to the Yankees could be new life for the Royals.

So, are the Yankees to blame for this and are they worthy of this reputation?

Most definitely, but why is this such an ‘evil’ thing? The Yankees aren’t stealing or asking for handouts, and the owners are beyond generous in their efforts to give New York the best team they possibly can.

Now, back to Blum’s article.

Blum was not openly criticizing A-rod or the Yankees, it is a mere comparison of actual numbers. It also reminded everyone, like we could forget, how rich A-rod is and how much the Yankees spend.

Blum is stating proven facts, and it makes the Royals out like abandoned orphans who are doing the best with what they have.

Conveniently, Blum omitted some important facts that made me change my whole original thoughts.

Here is what was left out:

Blum’s article states:

Kansas City’s payroll was cut in half from $72.3 million at the start of 2010. The Royals traded Zach Greinke and Gil Meche retired. The Yankees, as usual, had the top payroll but dropped to $201.7 million from $206.3 million at the start of last season.

This explains the Royals payroll, which currently stands at $36.1 million.

What Blum forgot to mention was that after the 2010 season, the Royals received a revenue check for $32 million (or more). This check comes out of the wealthy pockets of teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies, who each give up 34% profits so these lower market ball-clubs, like the Royals can have the funds to stay competitive.

According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, Forbes reported that the Royals are worth $351 million and that 2010 marked the seventh running year in a row the Royals have finished the season in the black (meaning the Royals were profitable). This was shocking, until I did some research on my own.

The Royals owner, David Glass the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc is worth billions of dollars. Translation is that Glass could spend $50 million on his team without blinking an eye, but instead Glass makes a profit at the expense of giving Royals fans a non-contending team.

While running Wal-Mart, Glass was the anchor behind the company’s expansion. The methods and ethics used to obtain the success with Wal-Mark are horrific. Glass boasted the fact that Wal-Mart products were made in the USA, when the truth is they were coming out of sweat-shops in Asia. You can read his reactions when asked about by Dateline in this blurb called NAILED in TIME MAGAZINE.

This makes me feel even worse for Kansas City and the Royals fans because their beloved ball-club is at the hands of a greedy billionaire, whose priority is to add more zeros onto his billions.

In turn, this makes Blum’s article lose its creditability, as it is pointless without giving us all the facts. Unless, Blum was just taking a subtle jab to remind people why they should hate A-rod and the Yankees.

All Yankee fans can do is thank their lucky stars that the Steinbrenner family is so overly unselfish. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: The Not So Evil Empire’ »

New York Yankees Camp Is About To Get Crazy

Look for the big press tent to be erect at Steinbrenner Field today, as the press frenzy is about to begin.

The New York Yankees position players officially arrive at Spring Training, which entails media darlings Alex Rodriguez and the Captain Derek Jeter.

A-rod has done a number on himself over the last month starting with his lady pal Cameron Diaz and the infamous Super Bowl feeding.

Then three days later on February 9th, gossip hounds TMZ filmed A-rod on a shopping spree with Diaz back in NYC. What started out as signature A-rod checking himself out in the mirror, turned into him picking his nose.

This last week A-rod has been seen working out with Diaz and now the unfortunate couple is rumored to have bought an apartment together at the Rushmore over on Riverside Boulevard. This seems more like an A-rod buy, as Diaz would never buy at 64th-65th street on the Westside Highway, as it is not exactly a glamorous section of the city.

Regardless, as long as A-rod plays well this season the tabloid jargon will get forgotten about quick, just not today.

As for the Captain, he doesn’t want any of this attention and readily doesn’t deserve it. Jeter’s contract negotiations caused a media shi*-storm, and quotes were taken out of context to generate headlines before knowing the whole story.

For Captain Class, it will be business as usual and he won’t even address what is not even relevant anymore.

I can already hear the Captain stating that he is the Yankees shortstop now and that is what matters.

My prediction is Jeter puts up great numbers in 2011 and what can be said than?

Yankee fans get ready for media circus today.

Please remember don’t bring your popcorn until Monday, February 21st because according to Steve Marcus of Newsday, that is when A-rod is scheduled to speak with the press.
