New York Yankees: Rookie Ivan Nova To Debut On Mound Vs. Toronto Blue Jays

What a rare opportunity for rookie pitcher Ivan Nova to make his mark in New York Yankees pinstripes, by making his Major League debut tonight vs. the heavy-hitting Toronto Blue Jays.

Getting called up from Scranton-Wilkes-Barre is every rookie’s goal, but to start against another AL East ball-club, in middle of a tight pennant race is a lot of pressure. Can Ivan Nova do his job?

The Yankees obviously have a lot of trust in Nova’s abilities. He has been an ace in Triple-A with a 12-3 record and 2.66 ERA.

Look for Nova to throw a newly acquired slider. The Yankees hope is the 23-year-old righty can throw a lot of strikes to keep the team in first place within the division.

Toronto Blue Jays will counter with another youngster, 26-year-old Brandon Morrow.

On August 9, Morrow threw 137 pitches, posting 17-strikeouts against the Tampa Bay Rays, just missing a no-hitter, which would have been the second in Blue Jays history. Morrow did record his first complete game and shutout, which is a huge accomplishment for the young righty.

Morrow has made three starts vs. New York in 2010, in which he is 1-0, allowing 11 earned runs, three homeruns, four walks and striking out 24.

On the season, Morrow has a 9-8 record, posting a 4.45 ERA, allowing only 10 homeruns, with 153 strikeouts over 131.1 innings pitched. He has to get his walks rate down which is currently at 60 in total.

Morrow will be extra careful with Jorge Posada and Brett Gardner who have hit him well this season. Also, any pitcher facing Robinson Cano is aware that he has been a monster with the bat.

MY PREDICTION:

Nova vs. Morrow will be a no-decision, and the Yankees will win 5-2.

Dustin Mosely Leads New York Yankees to Red Sox “Dustin”

On Sunday night the third game in a four game set between the New York Yankees and the arch-rival Boston Red Sox took place.

Everyone was expecting to see Yankees’ starting pitcher AJ Burnett on the mound. So fans were puzzled when the screen in center field announced that Dustin Moseley would be facing the Red Sox’s Josh Beckett.

Burnett was a last minute scratch due to back spasms, but Moseley, as his replacement, didn’t go over too well in the Bronx.

Could Moseley handle the atmosphere of a Red Sox-Yankees game?

The answer is yes. Going into the sixth inning, Moseley had a pitch count of 69 with 39 strikes and 30 balls. Moseley was consistent, striking out five and walking two. He got run support from the team which played a major part in the win.

Moseley looked confident and got a well-deserved standing ovation from a packed Yankee Stadium.

Moseley is now 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA in his three starts in New York.

To say fans were thrown off would be an understatement. Imagine if Burnett had made his start and how disastrous things could have gotten.

Fact is that Burnett is about as reliable as a man guessing a woman’s pant size. Games go one of three ways for Burnett: He either stinks, dominates, or dominates for four innings only to implode in the fifth by giving up multiple home runs.

Moseley is unfamiliar to Yankees fans, as the relationship is too new. He originally replaced Sergio Mitre, who had been tapped to replace Yankees’ ace Andy Pettitte until he returns to health.

Moseley is not a rookie. In 2000 the Cincinnati Red drafted him in the first round, but got traded to the Los Angeles Angels in 2006. Moseley made three starts for the Halos in 2009 before having to undergo hip surgery. In his 23 total starts he is 8-7 with a 5.41 ERA.

Moseley saved the day on Sunday, but a move into the bullpen when Pettitte returns and the rosters expand seems imminent. He is not solid enough to keep in the rotation for the long haul.

Still, Dustin Moseley should be proud of his performance that propelled the Yankees to a headlining win.

Rays, Red Sox, Yankees One Team Has Got To Go

Timing is everything, especially in the American League East.

It will no doubt come down to the last second with an end result with either the Rays, Red Sox or Yankees deeming 2010 a complete wash-out.

Where are the three best teams in MLB currently standing?

  1. New York Yankees 52-31
  2. Tampa Bay Rays      50-33
  3. Boston Red Sox 49-35

Personally, an old-school ALCS would be mucho appreciated and I am not alone in my sentiments.

It does not get much better than Red Sox vs. Yankees that is a fact.

Problem is the Tampa Bay Rays are on the move and things are heating up for this talented ball-club.

Maybe it is just me, but the Rays make me cringe. Nothing is more unsightly for a team just to be talents, entitled and lazy individuals, which is the Rays in a nutshell.

One lesson I learned earlier this season was not to count out the Boston Red Sox. Even with 10 players on a DL list that reads Ellibury, Pedroia, Buchholz, Beckett and Martinez do not underestimate the Red Sox.

The day I first counted out the Red Sox within two weeks my foot was in my mouth. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is the master at fixing things. Epstein has proven himself, so all hail to the Red Sox organization without question.

Back to being a Yankees fan, it is easy to forget that the Bombers are a second-half team. Always exploding in July and August, but getting there is the tricky part. The ups and downs are ones that Dr. Phil and Oprah can’t even dissect. Continue reading ‘Rays, Red Sox, Yankees One Team Has Got To Go’ »

Baseball Basics: Statistical Basics

Hey newbie fans, hopefully by now you have started to grasp the basics of baseball.

Now with the season in full swing, you newbies should be ready for the next question. This has been asked a few times over the last week.

Baseball Basics Question:

WHAT STATISICS DO ALL THE ABBREVIATIONS STAND FOR?”

Batters and pitchers both have their own set of statistics. To make it easier, I have two separate posts, one for batting and the other for pitching. Continue reading ‘Baseball Basics: Statistical Basics’ »

Yankees Win But Today All Of Baseball Lost

Baseball lost a hero today with the passing of Ernie Harwell who was 92 years old.

For 55 years, Mr. Ernie Harwell was the quintessential icon of baseball broadcasters. Over 42 of those seasons, Mr. Harwell was the radio voice for the Detroit Tigers earning a niche in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. Detroit felt pride because Mr. Harwell was so proud of the city each and every day.

Mr. Harwell invited the listener into the ballpark. His voice always kept it easy and never took the spotlight off the game.

The broadcaster’s voice did not compare to the kindness of his person. Out of the booth, Mr, Harwell was gracious to people with his kind demeanor, his endless smiles and humble whit.

For baseball fans’ everywhere his love for the game was rarified air, that will be sorely missed.

The sports world is forever indebted to you for writing the greatest meaning of baseball, that will forever define it.
