New York Yankees: Joba Chamberlain Meet Tommy John

NJ Star Ledger’s Marc Craig is reporting that New York Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain elbow injury has escalated from the 15-day DL to having a torn elbow ligament that might require Tommy John surgery.

This is not good news for the Yankees bullpen, who had the most solid group of arms to start the season and now the majority of them are on the DL.

This is unfortunate but fixable, but the Yankees have keep to together through this rough patch long enough for GM Brian Cashman to make it better.

Phil Hughes is throwing to live batters and there is no reason to not put him in the bullpen when he returns in two weeks. If you remember back in 2009, Hughes dominated in the long-relief role and he was a major reason for the team turning it around mid-season.

I would love if Cashman looked internally, as Andrew Brackman, Dellin Betances and Manny Banuelos have been killing it in the minors this season.

I am aware that this trio known as the ‘Killer B’s’ are still developing, but their talent is evident.

Brackman and Bentances have dealt with injuries and need more time to develop but have been noted as not being close to Major-League ready yet. Brackman has not been as effective this season either.

Without question the youngest of the three, 19-year-old Banuelos is by far the most talented. During Spring Training even the great Mariano Rivera took notice, as he told ESPN that Banuelos was “the best prospect I’ve ever seen.”

Cashman will exercise all other options before Banuelos is even a possibility. Cashman knows how special this kid is and the Yankees have messed up enough young arms being selfish already.
My bet is that Banuelos will make an appearance in the Bronx before the end of the 2011 season because there really are not many other solutions for the Yankee to go after. They need help in the bullpen or else the season could be in jeopardy.

New York Yankees Update: Joba Heads To 15-Day DL

It was just reported on CBS New York that Joba Chamberlain is headed to the 15-day DL, after the results of an MRIdone earlier

Joba Chamberlain

this morning that revealed a strained flexor muscle in his throwing arm.

This is more bad news for an already depleted Yankees bullpen, as more of them are injured than healthy.

Maybe Yankee fans will get to see one of the coveted prospects get promoted after this news, but knowing Cashman he won’t chance it but it is starting to annoy Yankee fans who are drooling to see if one could be the next “Freak”, as the East Coast needs one too.

Good news is that Mark Teixeira feels great and it playing without a hitch after getting plunked in the knee by Red Sox Jon Lester last night.

New York Yankees: Remember Pitcher Ian Kennedy, Let Me Help

After watching the New York Yankees bats waste a great outing from AJ Burnett in a 3-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox in the first of a four game set, I turned to the MLB Network to see what else was happening in baseball.

First came the phone-in from White Sox pitcher Phil Humber and some well-deserved congratulations for stunning the Yankees, getting the White Sox a much needed win. This was Humber’s sixth start in his career and the first time he went past six innings ever, as he had a no-hitter through seven until A-rod broke it up.

This is a typical performance from the Yankees, who are known to get beaten by pitchers they have never faced before, a theme that was repeated over and over by the MLB Network’s round table.

I almost changed the channel after the tenth Brian Wilson beard commercial, but I held out once I heard Arizona Diamondback and ex-New York Yankee Ian Kennedy was flanking the Philadelphia Phillies was coming up LIVE.

Kennedy was part of the Yankees trio of Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, and tonight he posted his first complete game shutout tonight against the Phillies.

What is even more gratifying is that Cliff Lee was the opposing pitcher, but I am not done yet. Kennedy became a dad this past Sunday morning at 2:04am and it took the new dad 2 hours and 4 minutes to get the win. Kennedy still has that wicked change-up that seems to be clocking in in the low 90’s.

Goodness, maybe the Yankees let the wrong one of the trio go? Considering Chamberlain is about to hang up his gloves and call it a career; while Hughes is getting an MRI as his dead arm is still well…. dead.

Congratulations to Kennedy, his family and the Diamondbacks for shutting down the predicted 2011 World Series Champions.

Quick note: This is regarding Wilson’s beard; after getting embarrassed by the Atlanta Braves in your own house, don’t you think it is time to shave that thing off. I presume Wilson’s extra paycheck is coming from the beard, but the Giants are not winning. You would think a four game sweep by a team that you beat in the playoffs last season would be enough of a reason to grab that BIC, because no one is fearing much except Timmy Lincecum, who might not even like baseball that much.

New York Yankees: Freddy Was Totally Ready As Garcia Wins Debut Vs. Rangers

Following Friday’s double whammy of losing Phil Hughes to the DL and the first game to the Texas Rangers since the 2010 ALCS, the New York Yankees needed something to go their way.

Well, on a cold and rainy day in the Bronx that was exactly what they got from starter and new Yankee Freddy Garcia in his official debut.

Throwing six-scoreless innings and completely blanking the heavy hitting Texas Rangers, the Yankees could not have written it any better.

Garcia pitched like a genius by keeping ahead in his counts by dominating the fastball swinging Rangers with his off-speed pitches. Garcia only allowed two hits and needed 84 pitches in the outing.

The Yankee bats followed starting with Mark Teixeira’s two-run homerun in the first inning but his fifth on the season, and the team never looked back, beating the Ranger 5-2.

Let me just say, I was in attendance for Garcia’s start and the weather conditions were about the least ideal possible. Garcia certainly put a smile on my face after six.

It was also great to see a still hyped up Joba Chamberlain come in the seventh. Joba seems to have been bitten by the same bug from 2007. It was utterly delightful to see Joba ecstatic about doing his job again.

The series finale is Sunday night at 8pm and both teams would like to come away with the series win.

It will be Yankees ace CC Sabathia on the bump, against the Rangers, 27-year-old Alexi Ogando.

*Look for my prediction and preview, about this Sunday night match-up to follow.

New York Yankees: Hughes Improves And Joba Rules In Walk-off Win

Arriving in first place, only to leave in second is just what the New York Yankees hoped to do to Buck Showalter’s Baltimore Orioles. Winning Wednesday tied the teams atop the AL East; but beating the O’s for a second night in a row put the Yankees back on top.

The Orioles came in to the Bronx playing good baseball. It was the first time in nano-years where the O’s only chance to win wasn’t completely dependent on the Yankees beating themselves. Truth is that Buck’s Birds were now deemed good enough to beat the Evil Empire on their own merit.

Or at least that is what Showalter’s presence made you believe; unfortunately his Birds came in with their wings between their legs.

Following AJ Burnett posting his third win on the season, which puts him one ahead of the Red Sox, the shaky Phil Hughes was slated to take the bump. This time the Yankees were ready after Hughes’ implosion in Fenway last weekend.

Regarding Hughes, he got away with one tonight, but let’s not forget that baseball is a team sport and picking up the slack is a satisfying example of just that.

This does not at all mean that Hughes can take his darn old time or that the team will be able to do this every fifth day. All it did was earn Hughes another start; at least that is what I would presume.

The bullpen performances’ of Bartolo Colon and Joba Chamberlain were as close to perfect as anyone could ask for.

Joba looked dynamite, like 2007 bug-game style, retiring all five batters he faced; and tagging out a runner from scoring at home. Joba had that fierce look in his eyes, taking complete control of what happened and it was nice to finally see that fire again.

Colon and Joba’s determination went viral in the Yankees dugout, as the bats responded immediately with Posada going yard to tie the game at 5-5 and the great one, Mariano Rivera holding the O’s at bay to give the Yankee bats a chance to win in extra innings.

It didn’t take long, as in the 10th inning; Yankees Universe got to see the first 2011 (of hopefully many) Burnett walk-off pies slam into the game’s hero Nick Swisher. The Yankees will take it as who doesn’t’ love the walk-off win?

Hughes’ outing was a tad better, not like that was very hard. The 24-year-old is barely keeping his head above water but is still treading. Many will say that Hughes’ performance is getting masked because he got so much help, but the team won and once that is final, the how doesn’t really matter much.

This is the perfect way for the Yankees to head into an 2010 ALCS re-match with the Texas Ranger this weekend, especially for the team that is looking to taste some sweet revenge.

New York Yankees: Finally Say Adios To Sergio Mitre

Sergio Mitre

Image via Wikipedia

Ex-New York Yankees Sergio Mitre is a phrase I have been waiting to hear for two years.

Well, according to a tweet from ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, this is now fact, as the Brewers are bringing the talents of Mitre to the city of Milwaukee.

What talents did the Brew Crew just acquire?

Not quite sure, but the Brewers are currently missing their two aces Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum so presumably Mitre would be used as a filler.

The Sporting News reported that Marcum should be ready to go at the start of the season, but Greinke’s broken ribs are a few weeks away from returning.

So, Mitre will replace Greinke temporarily in April or be used as a long man, but who cares not soenthing Yankee fans need to worry about any longer. The Brewers will face the Reds, Phillies, Braves and Cubs in the month of April, which is tough bunch of NL hitting teams. Well, I guess the Brewers are hoping for a speedy recovery because if it is the Mitre Yankee fans grew to know he will get slammed by these hard hitting clubs.

This means the Yankees rotation is almost set with Sabathia, Burnett, Hughes, Nova and Colon/Garcia/Millwood. Garcia said he will take a bullpen job and he is a way better option then Mitre.

This move gets two thumbs up and a snap, as Mitre should have been let go way before this.

Hopefully skipper Joe Girardi will not be too heartbroken by the break-up, but I just hope Mitre doesn’t let the door hit him on the way out.

Six days and counting till the regular season….
