New York Yankees: TGIF

Waking up yesterday morning, I had that pit in my stomach and you can bet I wasn’t the only New Yorker with that feeling.

On Opening Day 2010 at Yankee Stadium, Derek J...

I had realized that last Friday night might have been the last time I ever would hear ENTER SANDMAN blasting over the speakers at Yankee Stadium.

Like most baseball fans, I was distraught and now would have the weekend to think about things.

That is until Mo confirmed in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium, “I’m coming back. Write it down in big letters. I’m not going out like this,” and all of a sudden I smiled again.

Yes, losing Mo for a season stinks, but it doesn’t compare to the feeling it left when it was possibly for forever.

Friday continued to get better as the Yankees snapped a three-game losing streak beating the Royals 6-2.

Ace CC Sabathia took charge throwing for eight solid innings, and Captain Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and drove in two runs.

All that came to my mind was TGIF…thank God it’s Friday.

And that is when I started digging around the web for some other Yankees-positives, a tad silly yes but figured I might as well would share a few: Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: TGIF’ »

Yankees captain wants his MVP

I WANT MY MVP?

Derek Jeter

Most people would say that the New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter has it all, but they are wrong.

Ok, so Jeter is rich, handsome, dates hot brunettes, has enough World Series Championship rings for every finger on his right hand, Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers and countless awards in just about everything.

Now, if you asked Jeter about what is missing from his trophy case he would probably say another WS ring because it is all about the championships; or so he says.

See, Jeter has never won the AL MVP Award; and even though I do believe in a team first attitude, anyone with a half-a-brain who could achieve that kind of personal accomplishment would strive for it.

Now, a lot of people feel that Jeter got swindled in the 2006 MVP voting, as he came in second behind Minnesota Twins Justin Morneau. After looking at both players’ 2006 stats, I have to disagree on this one.

I do think Jeter got robbed of the award in 2009 when he finished third behind teammate Mark Teixeira and the winner, who ironically was another Twin, Joe Mauer.

Winning an MVP would be the icing on the cake for the Yankees Captain, but the odds are stacked against him. Continue reading ‘Yankees captain wants his MVP’ »

New York Yankees: Captain calf

Where was New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter yesterday?

He was supposed to be at Steinbrenner Field.

He said he would be playing in the game on Tuesday vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He maintained that his sore left calf was, “not that big of an issue.”

Wait…have you heard this one before?

Yes, it was just last June when Jeter felt the same soreness, different leg.

His right calf soreness showed up as a Grade 1 strain after an MRI, and that turned into Jeter missing 18 games. He finally returned on July 4th but just six days later he couldn’t play or show up at the 2011 All-Star Game siting the injury as the reason.

So, should Yankees fans be concerned?

Yes, as it has already been a week, and Tuesday has suddenly turned into Friday. I mean seriously, Jeter’s sore right calf is starting to sound a little too much like the 2011 story. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Captain calf’ »

New York Yankees: Party On Captain

New York Yankees Captain Derek Jeter is having a good ‘old time this off-season, and why the heck not.

As if you didn’t know already, Jeter is single again and slaying chicks all over NYC. And all I can say is party on Captain.

The NY Post’s Emily Smith and Tara Palmeri kindly found some of these women and reported that the Captain’s MO is a lady will “stay with him at his apartment in New York, and then he gets them a car to take them home the next day. Waiting in his car is a gift basket containing signed Jeter memorabilia, usually a signed baseball.”

Wow, I don’t know about any of you ladies but a ride and a present is not such a bad deal considering the circumstances.

You would have to be an idiot to think anything relevant might evolve from throwing the cat around town for a night with a guy who has as many options as Jeter does.

Jumping in the sack with Jeter is not going to make you stand out. And even you can suck a tennis ball through a garden hose, I will bet my life that Jeter has seen it, done it and had better. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Party On Captain’ »

The Yankees Could Be Moving On Up….A Ton

The Yankees are about as tight lipped as Tiger Woods, regarding who the team’s biggest crush is on right now.

For the Yankees, it is more of a guessing game involving just a few names, a love contract and a new outfit.

“Tiger-Land” is the small country forming by the list of the Woods-Women is growing. This is at such a pace Woods could have his own 40-roaster before Cashman ever says a word.

Over in Yankee-Universe, the rides are getting older and the team needs to get some youth for next season.

This is not saying ability is based on age. Mariano Rivera is living proof at 40, along with 34-year-old Jeter who had a career year, and Arod who is the same age, has not even reached his ultimate potential.

Lately, as I read rumors everyday I started to go over stats, age, ability and attitude. A fact is that the team’s ability is undeniable heading into 2010 season but with some fresh stock it could be even greater. The Yankees need a player who….

1. Is a young, under the age of 26 would be nice.
2. Has played more then one season in the Majors.
3. Already displays obvious talent.
4. Has the potential to exceed expectations with some direction.
5. Needs to be an Outfielder.
6. *Fast On The Bases

*big factor

Tampa Bay Ray’s BJ Upton could solve this problem, with a close second going to St. Louis Cardinal’s Matt Holliday. BJ Upton is just 24 years old and had a good season considering he is coming off major shoulder surgery.

Upton’s 2009 season stats finished with a batting averageof.241, OBP .313, 55 RBI, 79 runs scores and an astonishing 42 stolen bases. His 2007 season was his best, hitting 24 home runs in addition to 82 RBI.

No one will deny the potential for this youngster and with the right direction the results could be enormous.Upton is Rays starting center fielder.

His range defensively is excellent but he has seemed sluggish and lazy more then just on one occasion. It would seem that a move to another ball club is just the spark this kid needs.

Upton ended 2009 season by dazzling the Bombers, as he hit for a cycle on a night when CC Sabathia was starting at the Trop. This was a first in regards to HUGE achievements for the youngster, and the first for the Rays organization as well.

What a nice confidence booster going into the off-season and gives BJ a lot to think about. Upton has the potential to be a big star. His attitude just needs some guidance and no better place to get it than in the Bronx. Continue reading ‘The Yankees Could Be Moving On Up….A Ton’ »

Once again, my sincerest CONGRADULATIONS to Mark Teixeria and Derek Jeter for winning Silver Sluggers.

The Jeter Family will have to build a house just for Derek’s awards. Now the one the means the most to our Captain (because only one he seems to not have won, other then a Cy Young) the MVP Award will be announced on November 23rd. Jeter is well in contention for this honor and I think he deserves it for so much more then just his stats alone.

The Pre-ALCS Starts Tonight

When the season started the Red Sox looked like the team to beat. Boston took the first eight games against the Yankees and at the All-Star break were in first by three.

Since the All-Star break the Yankees have given all of baseball a message, that this team wants to win. Boston has fallen back the last two months having injuries in all the wrong places.

It was becoming just a little long to be a slump, the idea that the Yankees might have cast a spell started to sink in.The last two weeks Boston has started to look like themselves again. I would be stunned if they did make the playoffs but that’s what that are playing for this weekend.

The Boston Red Sox came into New York today still not officially in the post season. Even with the Yankees guarantee for October, this is a series that is more like a preview of what’s to come.

In words or instructions by our Captain, Jeter has said no celebrating because the team wants the division and that is not looked down. That would give the Yanks the top spot and could play most likely Detroit in the Bronx. The other option is Angels in Anaheim. No one wants that to happen and the reasons are evident.

Sending Boston to California fist round would be ideal but who would the Yanks rather face if they win the first round.?

I will be able to answer that after this series. Both teams are playing well and it is the fairest of their match-ups thus far.

Pitching will decide these games. Boston is on fire from the mound and the only real issue is Joba. On the schedule it is his night but it has been said that CC Sabathia might start which is five days because of the off day yesterday. AJ pitched lights out on Wednesday and with the extra day makes CC an option it would be idiotic to use Joba.

Home field would give the Yankees the assurance that this could happen in the playoffs because Joba is not showing any sign short of getting worse.

This could be the same teams fighting in two weeks in the ALCS. Finally, the old school match-up that baseball fans have missed dearly.
