New York Yankees Hot Stove: Cashman Makes Progress On His Not-To-Do-List

I guess it is so far so good for New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman, as he crossed a lot of things off his 2012 off-season not-to-do-list at the Winter Meetings this past week.

New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Truth About Pujols

Could the New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman be pulling a Philly fast one by secretly going after the top free agent on the market, Albert Pujols?

The Yankees are one of the few, if not the only, team that could legitimately offer Pujols the money he wants; along with the stage and superstar teammates that will allow him to flourish.

Even though superstar Mark Teixeira now occupies first base, but where there is a will there is usually a way.

Maybe you did realize that Tex did make 11 starts at third base, logging 99 innings and committed seven errors back in 2003.

This leaves the Yankees with the two scenarios.

  1. Move Tex to third, A-rod to shortstop and Jeter to the outfield…and BAM now there is room for Prince Albert.
  2. Or keep the Captain at shortstop, Tex to third and A-rod can be the DH…and BAM another way to get Pujols in pinstripes.

Do you want to know the truth about where I heard this rumor?

Can you handle the truth? Continue reading ‘New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Truth About Pujols’ »

New York Yankees: Free Agent Pitching Possibilities

Brian Cashman

It came as no surprise to learn that the New York Yankees inked Brian Cashman to another three-year deal to stay the franchise’s GM, aka The Brain Behind the Bombers.

Cashman didn’t miss a beat, as he was busy locking up the team’s ace CC Sabathia for a guaranteed five years, with a vesting option for a sixth, just hours before he worried about his own contract.

For the first time in forever and after last off-season’s absurd drama, the Yankees will finally start an off-season calmly. For Cashman that means his attention will not solely be focused on putting all the pinstripe eggs into one free agents basket.

The Yankees GM said the main goal was resigning Sabathia; otherwise his focus will be on “pitching, pitching, pitching.”

Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News wrote a great article and quoted Cashman responding to what the Yankees off-season goals this past Tuesday:

“As we enter the process this winter, I don’t anticipate a bat being of need at all. I anticipate people knocking on our door about the current bats we have. Offense is not a problem with this club, despite what happened in the Detroit series here in the first week of October. I don’t think we’re offensively challenged at all.”

Well, all this leaves for certain is that the relentless New York media will be mustering up plenty more BS than usual, as fans wait for 2012 Spring Training to start. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Free Agent Pitching Possibilities’ »

New York Yankees: Sabathia To Opt Out Tonight

The latest news is that the New York Yankees have made a new contract offer to ace CC Sabathia.

CC Sabathia

NY Times David Waldstein got confirmation that the offer was made over the weekend, but the unidentified source would not give specifics.

All MLB player and club options expire at midnight tonight, and according to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Sabathia is going to opt-out of the remaining four years and $92 million left on his original seven-year, $161 million contract. Sabathia is going to hit the free agent market.

After talking to some New York fans, all were on board that tacking on more money and years to Sabathia’s contract was the right thing to do.

So, knowing the situation it is easy to presume that the Yankees offer was lucrative.

I know that Sabathia retracted past statements about how he would not opt out, and everyone understands that he should get a new deal with more years etc. I just assumed that if Yankees made an offer, Sabathia would sign on the dotted line.

Where I went wrong was thinking the opting out part would only be exercised if the Yankees were being stubborn. And why wouldn’t I after listening to Sabathia state how much he loves New York, the fans, and blah-blah-blah. It seemed exercising the opt out would be Sabathia’s last straw. New York Yankees: You Can’t Always Get What You Want, But You Can Win

“No” is not a familiar word heard in the New York Yankees front office.

General manager Brian Cashman has the resources to woo players to come play in the Bronx, so what happened this offseason?

It has to be expected that the Yankees sans Mr. George Steinbrenner lost a little bit of their appeal.

Not many owners possess the passion and fire that the Boss displayed. Even the negative stories about how he was a tyrant with unreal expectations were equalized by his never-ending willingness to help.

So, what the heck happened to the Yankees missing out on Cliff Lee and not signing any top free agent? Why is Andy Pettitte so hesitant to commit?

In my opinion, the unmistakable absence of Mr. Steinbrenner is what is crippling the Yankees.

Imagine yourself as a player who the Yankees wanted in pinstripes while Mr. Steinbrenner was the principal owner. Hence, Mr. Steinbrenner thought that the Yankees needed to acquire you to win. Figuring out how to get a player was never the problem; it was just a matter of when, because the Boss would go to any extreme. Going from Good To Great: Why the Yankees Need To Sign Rafael Soriano

I have mentioned this a few times already, but he is worth the attention again.

Rafael Soriano is still a free agent, available and on the market. Whatever it is shocking considering he was the AL’s dominate closer in 2010 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Even before Cliff Lee’s decision, Soriano as a player would have been more than enough for the New York Yankees to walk away with heads high.

Soriano was the best closer in the AL in 2010, leading the league with 45 saves, posting a 1.73 ERA, striking out 57 in just shy of 63 innings. Soriano was named to the 2010 All-Star team, won the 2010 AL Rolaids Relief Man Award, finished eighth in CY Young and 12th in MVP voting respectively.

Soriano will cost his new team two-draft picks as he falls into the Type A free agent category.

Yes, he will not come cheap especially considering his agent is Scott Boras, but it would be money well spent.

Boras makes any team pay no matter what, but the greediest agent has some tainted history with the Yankees, which might drive the price up some.

Look it is no secret the Bombers are a tad desperate, whether GM Brian Cashman and the little Steinbrenner’s care to admit it, fans know it, the players know it and Boras knows it.

Soriano’s role would change, as he would set-up to the great Rivera. Soriano was in the bullpen for the majority of his early pro-years. Continue reading ‘Going from Good To Great: Why the Yankees Need To Sign Rafael Soriano’ »

Like It Or Not, Boras Sweetens The Pot

It’s pretty much official that Johnny Damon will not be ending his career in pinstripes or any other team for that matter.

Damon’s inflated head can be attributed to his agent Scott Boras.

Boras, sports agent to the stars, has bullied the Yankees in the past in attempts to get bigger contracts. As a professional and a loyal Angels fan, Boras knows the game and his greedy tactics take the love out of it for the clients.

In 2007 Boras convinced his client Alex Rodriguez to hit the free agency market because the Yankees were not seeing his $500 million dollar value. It’s safe to say that Arod agr

eed that this tactic to scare the Yanks into more money would never go as far as it did.

Boras broadcast-ed Arod’s opt-out during Game 4 of the World Series, which pissed off players and fans for good reason. Boras got the media’s attention on Arod but acting as if his client was bigger than baseball went to far. Continue reading ‘Like It Or Not, Boras Sweetens The Pot’ »
