New York Yankees: Gardner going to doctor today

ESPN New York reported that New York Yankees speedster Brett Gardnerwould have his right elbow examined by doctors following the 1pm rubber match vs. the Cincinnati Reds today.

Gardner has rehabbd his elbow and said:

“If I could start swinging here in the next couple of days, I’ll be ready by next weekend for sure.”

The Yankees have been without Gardner for 29 games, and his return will be welcomed with open arms.

Whether Gardner will be the difference maker for the Yankees is a whole different issue, as the team has been painfully bad so far this season.

Without a doubt the Yankees are better with Gardner, as just his speed alone, 49 steals in 2011, adds another dimension that opposing pitchers have to deal with.

Gardner was posting a .321 batting average before he went down in April 18th but Yankee fans need to realize that he only played nine games so to think that will continue would be foolish.

Look I want Gardner back as much as anyone else but it is hard to think that the Yankees issue will suddenly disappear.

Why the Yankees were supposed to lose to Twins

As I was throwing out papers today, I came across the reasons the Yankees were doomed to lose the first game of their series against the Twins.

The notes were a mess; as I had written them late on Sunday night but my reasoning actually turned out to be pretty accurate so I thought why not pass it along. So, here it is just a day and a dollar short….

After wrapping up a tough series against the Los Angeles Angels last Sunday night, the New York Yankees knew the Minnesota Twins were in town for four games.

The Yankees have literally manhandled the Twins posting a 23-4 record since 2009 including sweeping Minnesota in the 2009 and 2010 ALDS.

Still, that was when the Twins were still a contending playoff team, but that has not been the case since last season so winning all four games this week would seem like a no-brainer, right?

Well, not exactly because Monday night the Yankees had all the odds you don’t want stacked against them, almost guaranteeing they would lose.

 What the heck am I talking about?

Here is what I took into account before the first pitch was thrown on Monday night.

1)   Minnesota was already in NYC before the Yankees Sunday night against the Angels had even started.

2)   I find that when a new opponent comes to town after just being swept, the players tend to step it up a bit as they have a chip on their shoulders. The Twins flew in after just being swept in Arlington by the Rangers, add that to their history of losing to the Yankees and you have a team with a lot of incentives to win.

3)   The Yankees have a bad history when playing back-to-back ESPN games, as when they win on Sunday, they tend to lose on Monday. Continue reading ‘Why the Yankees were supposed to lose to Twins’ »

Do you think the Yankees are in trouble?

Do you think the New York Yankees are in trouble?

Well, the Yankees are off to a horrid start to the 2012 season, as they got out pitched, out hit and out managed by the Tampa Bay Rays who swept the Bombers right out of Tropicana Field this past weekend.

Even though it is the beginning of the season, I was embarrassed for the Yankees, as it seems like the same old story from the end of 2011 to many men left on base, 26 in total.

Since there are 158 games left to play to say anyone is in trouble would be ridiculous but getting swept to start the season certainly doesn’t feel good.

Here are two things to ponder over in the wake of this semi-concern:

1) Anyone watching the three games will tell you that Rays skipper Joe Maddon might have just taught the rest of baseball how to beat the New York Yankees by employing defensive shifts.

Righty or lefty bat didn’t matter, as the Rays scouting reports had an answer for almost every Yankee hitter as they kept hitting right into the shifts.

All I can say is that Joe Maddon’s moves from this past weekend were the most successful at stopping the Yankees from scoring runs.

I can promise you it is a blueprint that the other 28 managers in baseball will certainly get copies of even if it doesn’t work as well because it probably won’t.

The counter to this argument is that the Yankees could start hitting home-runs and unless Maddon hangs Rays players from the rafters at the Trop there is not shift that can block knocking it out of the park. Continue reading ‘Do you think the Yankees are in trouble?’ »

New York Yankees: Who was hot

The plain and simple fact is that New York Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova was looking hot.

And NO…. I did not mean in a sexual way, but on the mound as Nova was throwing heat last night in his second outing of the spring.

Nova pitched four innings, allowing just two hits, no runs and fanned three of Bobby Valentine’s Red Sox.

Boston did win the game 1-0 but this isn’t the regular season and Spring Training the outcomes are meaningless, it is what is in between that fans should focus on.

As for Nova, he silenced all the haters’ uncertainty about his lack of command. His change-up and slider almost looked identical and his fastball was clocking in at 92-95 mph on the radar gun.

And according to ESPN’s Andrew Marchand the timing couldn’t have been better, as skipper Joe Girardi announced, “he is going to start judging now.”

You can be certain that Nova has given his skipper plenty to think about, as after that kind of outing he is emerging into what I see as the Yankees number three. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Who was hot’ »

Yankees welcome Raul Ibanez spark Nick Johnson nightmares

I don’t think anyone was surprised when ESPN’s Buster Onley reported that the New York Yankees signed Raul Ibanezto a one year, $1.1 million deal with incentives, which could earn him up to $4 million. But does signing a DH even make sense?

Well it is familiar song, as the Yankees have a habit of signing guys like Ibanez; remember how well the switch-hitting Lance Berkman and lefty Nick Johnson worked out in New York.

Here is why Ibanez won’t work out either:

  • INJURY HISTORY.

The Yankees were aware of the injury histories that came with both Berkman and Johnson, and the same goes for Ibanez.

Ibanez has suffered from a persistent bad left groin injury for years. The injury still bothered him throughout 2011, and eventually it sidelined Ibanez at the end of the season.

Back in 2007, Ibanez missed multiple games claiming he injured himself when sleeping and could not move according to article by Larry Brown on Larry Brown Sports.

  • PRODUCTION.

Many people will defend Ibanez’s production because he hit 20 home-runs in 2011, but he also posted a .245 batting average, with a .289 slugging percentage, 106 strikeouts and drew 33 walks. The reason behind his crappy BA has to do with his declining walk numbers, as in 2010 he walked 68 times, which is more than double but Ibanez did consistently post 100+ strikeouts in both of the two last seasons.

The 20 home-runs are deceiving because I can personally attest that Citizens Bank Park literally makes Yankees Stadium feel like as enormous as Citi Field. To put it lightly, CBP is a hitter’s dream and a pitcher’s nightmare.

If you really want to get technical, 15 of Ibanez’s 20 homers and 61 of his 84 RBIs from last season were done in Philly. This explains is why he had a batting average of .286 at home and a pathetic .211 BA everywhere else. New York Yankees: 2012 do you know the possibilities

The New York Yankees head into a 2012 season that could very well be the most important in franchise history, as losing might all of sudden not an option more than ever.

What am I getting at here?

As New York might have a chance to do something that no other city has ever done. That is to be crowned champions in all four professional sports leagues, the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB in the same year.

Look I know a lot of things need to happen for this four-part scenario to unfold, but one has already won, two others are heading in the right direction and the Yankees would be the last piece of the puzzle.

Reality is when the clock struck midnight to start the New Year, just thinking about this happening would be considered outlandish, even though the Giants had fought their way into the NFL playoffs by this point.

This whole scenario was just still a pipe dream, but I couldn’t shake it out of my brain.

Then on February 5th, the Giants proved even themselves wrong by winning the Super Bowl XLVI.

So, now the most improbable New York team had won, and it set the bar high because if the Giants could figure out how to become winners as a team than the other three had no excuses.

Now the Rangers were cruising right along, and looking like the best team in the NHL, but the Knicks looked not so good. No longer just a mess, but a mess with All-Stars who couldn’t get it done in MSG. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: 2012 do you know the possibilities’ »

New York Yankees: Jeter Infection Spreads to Super Bowl

The Yankees captain Derek Jeter has always been quite the heartthrob, and not with just the ladies.

It seems that the Jeter bug has hit Indianapolis this week, as not one but both Super Bowl XLVI quarterbacks admitted to having a serious man-crush on El Capitan.

Yes, that would be one Patriots Tom Brady and one Giants Eli Manning.

The two QB’s took time to slip in some words of absolute admiration for Jeter during their media day this past Tuesday.

Both Super Bowl bound guys are taken; Manning is married to his very attractive college girlfriend; and Brady goes home to Gisele…need I say more?

The New York Daily News quoted Brady, just two days ago, as saying:

“You see someone who plays the game the way you think it needs to be played, like Derek Jeter. I love the way he plays the game.”
