New York Yankees: Sorry Big Papi No Room In Big Apple

“There’s too much drama, man,” … “There’s too much drama. I have been thinking about a lot of things. I don’t know if I want to be part of this drama for next year.” – David Ortiz

That was the answer given by Boston Red Sox David Ortiz, when asked during an interview by ESPN’s Colleen Dominguez about returning to the team that made him a superstar.

The slugger is about to enter free agency and admitted that he would have no issues with coming to play for the New York Yankees in the Bronx for 2012 season. CLICK HERE to watch the full interview.

Well, Big Papi in the Big Apple probably isn’t going to happen, as the Yankees are already have plenty of players to fill that DH spot and I doubt Ortiz would be willing to only hit on a part-time basis. He is also not exactly useful defensively at all at is 35 years of age.

Otherwise, Ortiz had a nice 2011 with 162 hits, 96 RBIs, 29 home-runs and a .309 batting average. He is a patient hitter drawing 78 walks, with a OBP of .398 and his a tough out for any pitcher with just 83 strikeouts on the season.

Even though the New York fans I have spoken with embraced the idea the Yankees of signing Ortiz to a one-year deal out of spite, don’t hold your breath.

The Yankees, like all MLB teams play with a 25-man roster except for the month of September, which leaves no room for decisions to be base on spite.

Sorry, Big Papi but next time you want less drama maybe not getting on national TV in the thick of things and stating that you would play for the New York Yankees would be a better idea. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Sorry Big Papi No Room In Big Apple’ »

New York Yankees Vs. Boston Red Sox: Pitching Will Dictate Rivalry

With #600 now in the past, the New York Yankees are ready to take on their rivals, the Boston Red Sox.

Boston has been hit hard with the unfortunate injury bug. Making the six and a half games the Red Sox need to catch the first place Yankees, who are tied with Tampa Bay Rays, not completely out of reach.

This puts a lot of pressure on Boston, as the importance of winning in the Bronx is pretty much a make or break situation.

The Yankees can’t afford to lose the series either because the Rays are playing great baseball right now.

It is no secret that the Yankees have lost two series in a row and to say that Alex Rodriguez’s 600 mark turned the team around has yet to be proven.

The Red Sox most recent DL member is first baseman Kevin Youkilis who is one of the best hitters in baseball and a Yankees killer. Youkilis is a significant loss and his absence will be noticed by both ball-clubs.

The Red Sox have their pitchers all back now and all healthy, so the Yankees have to counter at the plate.

Since pitching always dictates, let’s look at the four match-ups, over two posts: Continue reading ‘New York Yankees Vs. Boston Red Sox: Pitching Will Dictate Rivalry’ »

Philadelphia Phillies Are Dumb To Trade Jayson Werth

The last week before the MLB trade deadline on July 31st is usually an eventful and dramatic couple of days up until the last second.

The players who are on the trading block are not exciting and certainly bring no guarantee.

The only proven difference-maker was SP Cliff Lee, who was traded to the Texas Rangers two weeks ago. Lee was 2010’s diamond in the rough, or technically on the mound, because the fact is, he makes a team better.

The rest of the rumored players on the chopping block, minus Philadelphia Phillies right-fielder Jayson Werth, do not come with any certificate of guarantee. With Lee a goner already, this makes Werth a very popular guy.

It would be hard to believe the Phillies’ for sale sign is out on Werth. With 2B Chase Uttley on the DL till September and leadoff hitter SS Jimmy Rollins not 100 percent healthy, it doesn’t make much sense to me.

You can bet one thing for sure: The Phillies wish they had never let Cliff Lee go in the first place.

It’s crazy that a pitcher of the caliber and talent of Cliff Lee has worn four different uniforms in less than two seasons. That number be five after 2010 is over because Texas cannot afford Lee, or themselves for that matter.

Going back to Werth, he is not putting up the numbers he is capable of at all. Surely not the best timing, as Werth is a free agent at the end of 2010.

Is Werth to blame for his sub-par stats and should teams be proceeding with caution?

Absolutely not, considering the Phillies flipped Werth the bird and handed 1B Ryan Howard a blank check a year before his current contract is up, which isn’t till after 2011. Continue reading ‘Philadelphia Phillies Are Dumb To Trade Jayson Werth’ »

Inter-league Games Between Two Unequal Leagues

The Yankees are back home, not much has changed in regards to catching the Tampa Bay Rays who have held onto first place in the AL East all season. The Yankees are still two games behind, but continue to keep themselves the wild card team.

As I predicted, the Toronto Blue Jays have fallen to behind the Red Sox to fourth place, and this is a trend that will continue for Toronto.

The Blue Jays don’t play small ball at all, which is what comes in handy when team is slumping. Hitting home runs alone isn’t enough, but the Blue Jays pitching have allowed them to look more dominant.

This weekend begins inter-league play for all teams. Many feel it is unfair, as the American League has bullied the National League since these games were incorporated in 1997.

Why is the AL always better?

The AL is much more competitive because the designated hitter is a power bat, compared to having the pitchers bat.

NL pitchers almost get a break with every ninth batter being a pitcher, instead of facing the likes of a David Ortiz, Vladimir Guerrero or Hideki Matsui.

Matsui was the World Series MVP as the Yankees DH last season, which clearly proving it a significant position. Continue reading ‘Inter-league Games Between Two Unequal Leagues’ »

New York Yankees Look Good After Losing In Boston

Both bullpen’s battled for starters CC Sabathia who called it a night in the sixth, and Josh Beckett finished an inning before at the top of the fifth.

The Yankees were up 5-2 in six innings, but Sabathia sixth inning was all the Red Sox needed to score two runs to get momentum going.

Girardi will suffer unwanted heat for not pulling Sabathia at 100 pitches, but finishing out the six seemed logical. It just got unlucky. Sabathia had a solid first outing, and no reason he won’t win 19-20 games this season.

Both teams battled it out, but the Red Sox utilized on the Yankees mistakes to win 9-7.

Since it is the first out of 162 games, no need to get worked up even if the Yankees had not lost.

There are however a few things of note:

  1. Curtis Granderson fits. This is no small feat on the Yankees. Many kudos to Brian Cashman for adding another Cinderella following CC, AJ, Tex and Swisher.
  2. Joba gave up a hit, but overall he is much more comfortable in this role than as a starter. As time goes on Joba will succeed, and he can serve two, even three innings if needed.
  3. Alex Rodriguez started slow, but came through in the seventh inning after the Red Sox tied it up, scoring Tex and putting up a run as well. This together Arod looks so relax and sure it is tremendously encouraging.
  4. Jeter and Posada are still Jeter and Posada. Posada had three hits, two in clutch situations and Jeter was park of a double steal with Garner, who stole home. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees Look Good After Losing In Boston’ »

2010 Opening Game: What To Watch When The Yanks Take On The Red Sox

To repeat, is to duplicate or reproduce something.

For the New York Yankees, something is the World Series.

This trek starts tonight when they take the field at Fenway Park against their division rival Red Sox.

Josh Beckett and CC Sabathia will duel it out on the mound, and it will be the first time Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson get to show their stuff.

Johnson’s injury worries are a growing concern, and he has to prove himself trustworthy on the field.

Granderson in pinstripes has Yankee Universe bursting with excitement. He seems like one hell of a player, and a person.

Another Yankees to watch is Alex Rodriguez, to see if his superior end to last year will carry through to the 2010 season. Arod is key to this team’s success both on defense and offense. If all continues looking good, Arod’s on the road to an MVP type of season.

It will be intriguing to see how the Red Sox bats average against Sabathia. Boston’s off-season marked improvements on defense for certain, but the departure of Jason Bay in the squad might be more evident that GM Theo Epstein originally thought. Two Worries Of A Cocky Yankees Fan

The world saw the worst collapse in sports history take residence in Shea Stadium, in 2007, the pictures and tears brought city-wide shame. The Mets have been face first since, and the fans hate them for it.
