Lady Loves Pinstripes: Is my team trying to lose Super Bowl XLVI?

Looking at Ford Field the night of Super Bowl XL

At 6:30pm tomorrow, Super Bowl XLVI will officially be underway, so it only seems proper that I pick a winner and a loser between the New England Patriots or the New York Giants.

There is only one problem; I am a lifelong Giants fan.

Picking the Giants to win felt way too Jet-like to me.
Especially after seeing the behavior of Rex Ryan and his Jets, the last thing I expected was for the Giants players to go down that path the week of the Super Bowl.
As anyone acting overly confident before facing Patriots QB Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick is ultimately begging them for a bad day.
I always thought the last thing a self-confident person did was talk about it because they usually owned it.
Believe it, own it, or tattoo it on you behind for all I care but don’t turn into Rex Ryan because Halloween is in October, not February.
So, since I didn’t anticipate hearing any white noise from Big Blue this week it was very unfortunate when I did. Continue reading ‘Lady Loves Pinstripes: Is my team trying to lose Super Bowl XLVI?’ »

Super Bowl XLVI: New York Giants Need To Outsmart “The Belistrator”

Head coach Bill Belichick of the New England P...

Like most New Yorkers and New Englanders, I’ve got Super Bowl XLVI on the brain.

Now that the Giants and Patriots are officially both in Indianapolis, the anticipation level among fans here in New York is getting pretty crazy.

Las Vegas bookmakers have picked the Giants to lose on Sunday, but coming in as the three-point underdogs (depending on the sportsbook) is just the way Big Blue likes it.

So, what should the G-men watch out for on Sunday, other than Tom Brady?

The answer here is something.

What to look for exactly is a crapshoot, as Patriots coach Bill Belichick or as his players call him “The Belistrator” surely has something up his sleeve.

And considering this Patriots team is by far Belichick’s most vulnerable group, you have to presume he didn’t come up with something this past week.

Now lets say the Pats do have a sneak attack, whether it will work who knows, but my guess is the Giants coach Tom Coughlin hasn’t wasted too much time inventing possible conspiracy theories.

Admittedly, I cannot say the same for myself as I did come up with one possible long shot.

And it’s the emergence of #85 Chad Ochocinco (Johnson).

I am well aware of how bad Ochocinco has been since arriving in New England, but the excuse of him getting to know the Patriots system in the beginning of the season is well passed its due date.

Ochocinco came to the Patriots as a six-time pro bowler, with 10 years experience as the star wide receiver of the Cincinnati Bengals. He is no slouch, as just ask any teammate of Ochocinco’s and they will attest to how hard he works. Continue reading ‘Super Bowl XLVI: New York Giants Need To Outsmart “The Belistrator”’ »

Coach Rex Ryan and the New York Jets’ Road to the Super Bowl, Week 2

New York Jets fans can’t get enough of head coach Rex Ryan, but everyone else just wants him to shut up.

Ryan was the star of HBO’s Hard Knocks, but the minute the cameras left, Ryan kept stirring the pot to keep them coming back.

Everyone knows deep down Ryan is dying to kiss Bill Belichick’s Super Bowl rings. Guess Ryan forgot his Jets are winning the Super Bowl this season.

Ryan must have lost the team’s 2010 season itinerary that mapped the schedule, which includes the Super Bowl and a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes.

Someone might want to remind Ryan that in order to get to the Super Bowl a team has to win games.

The Baltimore RavensRay Lewis made this pretty clear to his old coach, both on and off the field:

“You still got to play the game. The game ain’t played through tongues. The game is played when you buckle up your chinstraps. So all this pressure he wants to put on this team, I hope they can cash the check he writes.”—Ray Lewis’ response to Rex Ryan before the Ravens beat the Jets.

Ryan can throw punches via his mouth with the best of them. Problem is the Jets can’t back up all the F-bomb quotes Coach Ryan is tossing at other teams.

Ryan’s approach is so far, not so good.

The “F this” and “we are the team to beat” attitude that Ryan displays with the Jets players has already flowed over into the locker room.

The team displays a sense of entitlement. This was inevitably going to happen because the line is too thin regarding how you are expected to behave and conduct yourself.

Sexually harassing a hot reporter in the locker room is about as ill-mannered as it gets.

The example to follow starts with the coach, and Ryan is sending one perplexing message.

Is Ryan the Jets players’ buddy or their leader?

It is almost impossible to be both, especially as a new head coach who’s trying to change such an atrocious team.

My bet is that the Patriots will lay a can of whup ass on the Jets on Sunday.

Than just maybe Rex Ryan will stick a sock in it and start teaching instead of talking.

Jets Pull Through, Feels Like Deja Vu

Rex Ryan‘s contagious spirit is spreading across NYC, as J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets are just one win away from the Superbowl.

To even dream that the Jets would be playing the Colts in the AFC Championship was beyond unthinkable and just three weeks ago.

Well, the Jets should already be very proud, because this was long overdue for the ‘other’ team that plays at Giants Stadium.

For Giants fans everywhere it is a sweet reminder of just two years ago.

The Jets have the #1 defense, a young QB who’s becoming a leader, two-headed monster of running backs, last game of the season was against the #1 team and a coach who demands greatness.

Sound familiar?

Also, the 2007 Champion Giants did not have one playoff game at home, neither do the Jets. Both NY teams considered the underdogs by a long shot and surely gives a team something to prove.

Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan brought life to a hopeless team. The Jets reputation only consisted of failure and disappointment for their loyal fans.

Green jerseys worn on Sundays in New York were commonly that of Eagles fans. The future looked grim.

This season a new coach, along with a rookie QB to once again attempt to find something that clicked. Even Brett Favre couldn’t help. NFL‘s superman QB seemingly lost his swagger wearing a Jets jersey too.

Prayers finally got answered.

Coach Rex Ryan publicly challenged big, bad Bill Belichick and his Patriots with such confidence his sanity was even questioned by Jets fans.

Days before the game, Jets ticket-holders each received a surprising voicemail from this new coach. Ryan asked the fans to once again, not only cheer louder than ever but to believe again.

Mission accomplished.

For the Colts, advice is they better listen to Ryan.

Ryan and his Jets have heart and nowhere to go but up. As the world watched in 2007, that is the recipe for champions.

This Giants Fan Thinks Rex Ryan Is A Genius

Sunday has become a favorite day of the week during the NFL season. This Sunday was no different but my Giants were the featured night game so I had the afternoon watch my Yankees.

Then I remembered that those Jets had talked so much trash all week about the New England Patriots. My first reaction was to feel badly for all my friends who are Jets fans.

Being a Jets fan in the last decade in NYC looked like a painful task. My encouraging words to think positively and then when you do win a Super-Bowl it makes it all worth it.

Hopeless faces would have a moment in which this came true. J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets…to only snap back to reality. Only had to look around and see the Giants jerseys everywhere to know who ruled the city.

When Rex Ryan started the intentional feud against Bill Belichick and his Pats, it took me by surprise. The Patriots and the Jets both AFC East teams could not have been more different. The Patriots are champions and the Jets lose.

Is this new coach a complete idiot? Is he trying to get his team killed or just wants to set a new NFL record for losing by the most points EVER in a game?

The comment turned into a full out attack by the Jets players. Declaring the fact of how the Patriots were doomed on Sunday. I just was so happy that my Giants were not the Jets.

As kickoff was just minutes away my phone rang and it was one of my Jets friends who was heading out to the Meadowlands for the game. He was so shocked as he got a voice-mail that morning from Rex Ryan asking for the fans to be louder than ever today for their Jets.

Now, with the Jets last few seasons it could not have been an easy task to ask of Jets fans. Just listening to the spark in my Jets pal’s voice had me realize, maybe this was just pure genius of Coach Ryan.

Why?

What did they have to lose as losing is nothing new to the Jets or their devoted fans.

The stadium was so loud at points the game had to stop three times. The fans stepped up to the plate but this time so did the Jets.

For a Jets fan, it must have been a feeling that had been long, long forgotten. Winning that game, talking that trash and realizing that the fans were still there it might have been a change for future years for the franchise.

My response to people asking me my opinion on the whole situation is that it was necessary and took courage to do. Either way the game could have ended up, the up side to the win was critical.

MY NOTE TO RYAN:

Dear Mr. Ryan,

I wanted to say welcome, to New York.

I am not a Jets fan (Giants) but your actions this past week were inspiring. I was genuinely happy for the Jets to finally win.

Being a Giants fan my loyalty is with Eli and company but nothing wrong with enjoying another team’s glories.

It speaks volumes as a new coach to have a team in which the players really play for you. That can takes years to build and some coaches cannot ever get the players motivated.

Like Coach Coughlin, tough love done fairly earns respect.

Now when you play my Giants this season it will actually be a football game.

All the best,

Kate

All the negative emails I never responded to, there is my answer.

The Jets finally have someone who believed in them before they won the first game in years that actually made a statement on Sunday. It was their Coach Rex Ryan.

The Giants had no one believe in them in the Super Bowl against the same team and then Coach Coughlin changed that.
