2011 AFC Championship Game Preview: New York Jets Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

NFL fans are buzzing awaiting the Championship games to commence this weekend.

By early Monday morning, two of the four remaining teams left will head to Dallas, Texas to play for a championship on February 6th 2011; the other two will head home.

Let’s look at the AFC Championship Game, as the New York Jets head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.

New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 2011 AFC Championship

The New York Jets are off to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Sunday night, in a game that will send one team home and the other to footballs holiest grail, the Superbowl.

The Jets have taken down the Colts and the Patriots; as Coach Rex Ryan’s game plan was not only on the field, as the Jets gave trash talking a new meaning.

Offensive? Yes. Classless? Definitely. Necessary? Maybe not, but in sports professional anything goes as long as you are winning and the Jets are still doing that.

So following the 28-21 win against the Patriots, most figured the Jets would start another week filled with more ridiculous antics.

Instead, the Jets have remained virtually silent, with only words of praise and admiration for the Steelers and QB Ben Roethlisberger. Making everyone wonder, why stop now?

The Steelers are not the preppy Pats, or orderly Colts, they are rough, dicey and hard-hitting.

They’re not polished or polite, as the Steelers are more what the Jets dream of becoming, terrifying and you don’t mess with any of them. For whatever reason the Steelers have the Jets respect.

Still, the Jets are no slouches either. Whether or not it is justified, Game-Green enters this game with a wealth of self-confidence. In the last two weeks New York has been on the road and trodden two of the supreme quarterbacks of all time, first Peyton Manning and second Tom Brady. NFL Playoff Predictions: Saturday’s Divisional Games Picks And Previews

With the unpredictable Wild Card weekend in the rear view mirror, the second weekend of NFL Playoffs is about to start.

The Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks are all still alive, and their next task will be to win against one of the four best teams from the regular season who are coming off a bye-week.

If anything, last weekend’s results were a warning that history is in the past, and that the point spreads can now be deemed practically inconsequential in trying to predict outcomes.

In all honesty, predicting the NFL Playoff games based on logic and stats is pointless because anything can happen. This was the theme of the 2010 regular season, as no team could stay undefeated after week four and teams played like Jekyll and Hyde.

Last weekend, I went one and four in my picks. My formula was pick winner, score and give a preview that explained how I came to that choice.

So, for the Divisional Games I will still give short summary of the match-up, but I am going to flip a coin to decide the winners/losers.

HEADS: hosting teams, coming off a bye-week…. Patriots, Steelers, Falcons and Bears.

TAILS: Wild Card Game winners, also known ‘the visitors’…. Jets, Ravens, Seahawks and Packers.

Now, let’s look at the four match-ups:

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (4:30pm CBS)

What a perfect way to kick of a playoff weekend, but with a ferocious rivalry between the Ravens and Steelers.

Right off the bat, physical is what comes to mind at the thought of each team individually.

Both teams’ Defenses, Ravens lead by Old Spice’s Ray Lewis and Steelers by Head & Shoulders Troy Polamalu, hit hard, and are dominate against the running game. The Ravens will shutdown Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall, but Ravens RB Ray Rice was the last RB to run 100 years against the Steelers defense.

Knowing each other so well, there are not many unknowns between them.

For the Ravens, the offense needs to have another good throwing week. Rice needs to distract the defense by earning some yardage to get the Steelers d-line’s respect, along with another good performance by Flacco who will look to TE Todd Head.

The Steelers need their offensive line to protect QB Ben Roethlisberger better because they won’t get away with not against the Ravens d-line lead by Terrell Suggs. Roethlisberger has not been going deep as much and has been solid throwing short passes this season. The Ravens dominate in stopping the short game, so look for Big Ben to go yard more this game.

For these two teams, the result in seven of their last eight match-ups was decided by a touchdown or less; the last four rendezvous have been decided by only a field goal and two of those four went to overtime.

This game is between two brutal bullies going at each other for blood, and it will be close. The victory will come within the last few minutes in the fourth quarter, either by Special Teams or by a fumble, would be my guess.

And the COIN says: Heads… Steelers will win. I might disagree with the coin on this one, as the Ravens looked really good last week once they got their composure before the half.

Green Bay Packers vs. Atlanta Falcons (8pm FOX)

This season’s only undefeated team at home, the 9-0 Falcons will host the biggest underdog in the NFL playoff history, as the 7-9 Seahawks are coming to town. Continue reading ‘NFL Playoff Predictions: Saturday’s Divisional Games Picks And Previews’ »

2011 NFL Wild Card Weekend: Sorting Out Winners From The Losers, Game By Game

The NFL Playoffs start this weekend with the four Wild Card teams traveling to the homes of the bottom two-division winners.

The top two teams in the AFC and the NFC both get a bye, as they will wait to see who their opponents will be in the Divisional Rounds.

Now let’s separate the winners form the losers, by looking at Wild Card Weekend game by game:

Indianapolis Colts vs. New York Jets*

Even thought the Jets have hailed themselves the team to beat, Colts QB Peyton Manning is dynamic and has had the Jets number in the past.

The Jets defense loves to blitz the opposing QB, but won’t work because Manning gets better under pressure. Fact is the Jets defense was better in 2009 and Manning eat them alive in the second half of AFC Championship Game.

The Jets-D needs to figure out how to get back there and fast because the Colts O-line sits atop the NFL. Leadership is one of Manning’s biggest strengths, but it is quite the opposite for Jets QB Mark Sanchez, who floundered in the second half of the season.

The Colts defense’s weakness is stopping the run, so that should take some of the demands off Sanchez, as the Jets will run the ball a lot. LT and Shonn Greene will have to come up big for Game-green, hopefully resting Week 17 will help the tandem get healthy again.

Look for the Jets to use back-up QB Brad Smith to run the Wild Cat to shake-up the Colts-D, but the veteran defense with lots of playoff experience won’t be fooled that much.

Rex Ryan needs to get his head checked and “making it personal” with Manning is just setting up his team to get killed. Ryan just needs to put a foot in his mouth.

WINNER: COLTS BEAT JETS 28-10

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens*

The Chiefs are legitimate again, as Kansas City has football fever but facing the Ravens will be a huge test. The Chiefs ended the season losing at home to the Raiders, which left too many questions on the table.

The Ravens have only gotten better, and RB Ray Rice has finally found his feet towards in the second half of the season. Rice can pound the average Chiefs defense, but the Ravens offense is very balanced all-around and QB Joe Flacco has proven very solid at the helm.

The Chiefs offense relies heavily on the run game, with duo Jamal Charles and Thomas Jones. Ravens defense stops the run better than anyone, so Chiefs will be forced to throw.

QB Matt Cassel is just not reliable as a deep passer and the Ravens are weak defending deep, middle passes. Cassel will have to relay on his arm against playoff teams, and the Chiefs have not defeated a playoff team all season.

Arrowhead Stadium is known to be one of the nosiest and the fans have definitely done their part in 2010, so expect the place to be shaken on Saturday afternoon but it won’t be enough.

WINNER: RAVENS BEAT CHIEFS 21-6

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers*

Coach Rex Ryan and the New York Jets’ Road to the Super Bowl, Week 2

New York Jets fans can’t get enough of head coach Rex Ryan, but everyone else just wants him to shut up.

Ryan was the star of HBO’s Hard Knocks, but the minute the cameras left, Ryan kept stirring the pot to keep them coming back.

Everyone knows deep down Ryan is dying to kiss Bill Belichick’s Super Bowl rings. Guess Ryan forgot his Jets are winning the Super Bowl this season.

Ryan must have lost the team’s 2010 season itinerary that mapped the schedule, which includes the Super Bowl and a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes.

Someone might want to remind Ryan that in order to get to the Super Bowl a team has to win games.

The Baltimore RavensRay Lewis made this pretty clear to his old coach, both on and off the field:

“You still got to play the game. The game ain’t played through tongues. The game is played when you buckle up your chinstraps. So all this pressure he wants to put on this team, I hope they can cash the check he writes.”—Ray Lewis’ response to Rex Ryan before the Ravens beat the Jets.

Ryan can throw punches via his mouth with the best of them. Problem is the Jets can’t back up all the F-bomb quotes Coach Ryan is tossing at other teams.

Ryan’s approach is so far, not so good.

The “F this” and “we are the team to beat” attitude that Ryan displays with the Jets players has already flowed over into the locker room.

The team displays a sense of entitlement. This was inevitably going to happen because the line is too thin regarding how you are expected to behave and conduct yourself.

Sexually harassing a hot reporter in the locker room is about as ill-mannered as it gets.

The example to follow starts with the coach, and Ryan is sending one perplexing message.

Is Ryan the Jets players’ buddy or their leader?

It is almost impossible to be both, especially as a new head coach who’s trying to change such an atrocious team.

My bet is that the Patriots will lay a can of whup ass on the Jets on Sunday.

Than just maybe Rex Ryan will stick a sock in it and start teaching instead of talking.

New York Jets: Rex Ryan’s Hard-Knocks Continues To Shock

What is Rex Ryan’s exact position with the New York Jets?

Head coach might not be appropriate any longer, as Ryan takes on the role of owner, agent, and GM.

It is no secret that Darrelle Revis is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. Fact is that any team’s defense becomes elite when a player, like Revis, can shut down the competition’s passing game.

Ryan knows this and surely didn’t hide his desperation to make Revis a rich man to get him back on the J-E-T-S.

Crazy to think Ryan would be in contract discussions with owner Woody Johnson’s money. Revis was present too, which just adds to a growing list of how unprofessional the Jets are as an organization.

Not to mention that Ryan’s word is crap, too.

Any ‘HARD-KNOCKS’ viewer can attest to this because Ryan stated numerous times that the Jets would carry two fullbacks.

Ryan was talking about Tony Richardson, whose leadership was so vital to the Jets’ young offense, but ended up cutting the 15-year veteran.

Latest news is that Ryan says Richardson will be back on the Jets soon. His excuse is that Woody Johnson’s wallet couldn’t, and won’t, guarantee Richardson’s salary.

Was Richardson’s $855,000 the make it or break it for Revis’ contract?

Enough so to go back on word, I would presume. Why doesn’t Ryan just have about another temper tantrum like he did on Revis Island?

Nobody puts baby in the corner, even if you are overweight and trash-talking before proving anything, NFL “coach.”

With the NFL season just days away, the Jets’ first game will be against the Baltimore Ravens, featuring the two Rays—one named Lewis and the other Rice.

I am a huge Ravens fan, always have been inspired by Ray Lewis’ pure love for football, which is rarefied air in sports these days.

The Jets’ first of 16 missions starts with the Ravens at the New Meadowlands Stadium…but according to Ryan:

“The message to the rest of the league is, hey, the Jets are coming, and we’re going to give you everything we got. And I think that’s going to be more than you can handle.”

Ryan will finally have the chance to prove everyone wrong next Monday night, and then he can say “Fu*$-Off” for real.

NFL: A Lady's Predictions

Warner, Farve, Lewis, LT, Brees, P. Manning and the Jets. Regardless if your team is playing or not, the match-ups are all dramatic in their own right.

With the games just hours away, NFL fans everywhere cannot help their anticipation.

Here are my playoff picks:
(picks have been carefully picked by both fact and emotion)

Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orléans SaintsSaturday @4:30pm

This game will be a battle where the running games on both sides will be the deciding factor. Both Warner and Brees will pass and be successful at it. Warner is tough, again and Brees tends to struggle at the end of the season which he did again losing the last three regular season games. Brees needs to step it up for the Saints to have a chance and be the Brees from before Christmas.

If Beanie Wells (RB) can get by the Saints defense and put some solid yards on the board and presuming the defense can have another good week, Cardinals will win by a field goal.

GAME: Arizona Cardinals

Baltimore Ravens vs. Indianapolis Colts – Saturday @8:15pm

Manning vs. Lewis but for Baltimore to win safety Ed Reed will have to back Lewis by picking off the pass. Baltimore is hot and needs to start with he same dominance as against the Pats. LB Terell Suggs did not play in the regular season game against the Colts and if he can get to Manning the Colts will be in trouble.

Payton Manning is the main cause for the Colts as their defense, who needed the rest is ranked 24th in running defense and Ray Rice will blast by them if they are not perfect. Payton has not fared well in the playoffs when the Colts are not the Wild Card but history is in the past but it can affect a player’s mentality for the future.

Since I have said from being of the season, the Ravens will make the Super Bowl.
GAME: RAVENS

Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings – Sunday @1pm

Look, my emotions factor in because I am a NYG fan. Obviously, I cannot stand anything Dallas and I think Romo is over-rated.

Regardless, Brett Favre is better than Tony Romo. Favre should tire out the defense by giving the ball to Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. Favre cannot get all fancy or start throwing it up for interceptions but the same goes for Romo too.

I have always said that the Cowboys need to run the ball more and then they will win. It worked last week against the Eagles and it is just far more reliable than Romo’s arm. Dallas is on the road which takes the pressure of 100,000+ screaming in your face and the teams seems to enjoy the lack of attention in other stadiums, pressure is off if they lose (till they get back to Dallas).

With Marion Barber coming off an injury, he did practice and is tough as nails of an RB. Barber back-ups are Felix Jones and Tashard Choice which give the Cowboys a three-headed monster that can exhaust any defense.

This will be a RB war and even with Peterson, with Barber healthier Dallas has a slight edge. This one is a close call.
GAME: VIKINGS

San Diego Chargers vs. New York Jets – Sunday @4:40pm

J-E-T-S, the most inspiring underdogs with a coach who has so much heart, you gotta love him. Rex Ryan is the answer the team and Jets fans finally found.

Heading into San Diego, where the Chargers have been quietly dismantling opponents, the Jets have the overall disadvantage. Mainly due to QB Mark Sanchez only being in his first season. Sanchez is great in his first year in NFL but he reminds me of Eli his first year or two. Sanchez needs to hand-off the football to the running game because interceptions need to be avoided at all costs.

The Jets offense can control themselves against the Charger defense. The question remains if the Jets Defense can cover San Diego’s Phillip Rivers and his arsenal of weapons.

The Jets have the #1 defense for a reason but Chargers TE Antonio Gates will be the difference maker because the Jets have to figure out who and how the D is going to cover him. Chargers WR Vincent Jackson will have his hands fill with the NFL’s best cornerback Darrelle Revis all over him. This frees up Gates and lets not forget about Darren Sproles, the LT Electric Glide, Legedu Naanee and Malcolm Floyd (aka. M-80 for his acrobatic moves at the height of 6’5).
GAME: CHARGERS
