Tiger Woods: The Winner Who Was Never A Champion

On February 19th, the world stopped to listen to Tiger Woods.

People wanted to see if he was genuinely concerned. Tiger owed us that, and whomever says it is a private matter is an idiot.

Tiger is the most recognized athlete in the world, with genuine ability to praise.

His marriage is between him, his wife and their kids. Tiger marketed himself as “family first, golf second.” Tiger worshipped his own idol.

To learn more, I read the section below from Tiger’s website, it opened my eyes about who he claims to be:

PERFECT NIGHT

Did you know Tiger likes to eat Vicodent and have affairs with porn-stars?

Tiger is Tiger Woods because he deceived the world into being more than just about golf.

No one likes to be fooled once, and again Tiger is doing just that.

To put it in clear english, Tiger is going to try and win; because Tiger still thinks he is bigger than the Universe.

That is about all the soul-searching he did during his indefinite leave to focus on being a better husband and father.

If on April 10th a Master’s Green Jacket is placed on Tiger Woods shoulders, all it means is Tiger can still play golf.

The media and the PGA are over-joyed because it means ratings and Tiger the product is all they care about. Tiger knows that if he ducked out till the US Open the oppurtunity might not be as big for his own brand.

Thats not enough for me. Tiger is so insincere it gives me shivers, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be watching.

To be a champion takes much more than a jacket or a prize. A Champion does not battle for their existence. They are unpretentious, humble and maintain their convictions, whatever they might be.

Tiger crossed the line of outrageous behavior, which many others have done before him. Difference is fans today claim athletes to be their own. We put them on a pedistal and want them to be special, but not only in their sport, in their character too.

I don’t see what is so wrong with that, Tiger is not just some regular pro-athlete….he is Tiger Woods.

Even In Sports, It Takes Two To Tango

The last few years, the sports world, has become its own Hollywood.

Apologies for off-the-field behavior are getting more attention than the sports themselves.

From a coach flicking the bird at the Pro-bowl, to the world’s biggest athlete admitting to sex affairs with hookers and prostitutes. These mishaps have been flooding media headlines everywhere.

A single story, breaking numbers for most consistent days on a front cover of the New York Post is now a sports record also.

The greatest press conference to date got televised on more channels than the Presidents State of the Union Address.

This is so telling to a greater extent than PED’s or smoking weed. The priorities of not just the United States, but of the world today is making the sports world a joke.

The pretext of athletes not being celebrities has never been connected, because just as movie stars, you bring pleasure to millions.

For athletes it’s just going to work. The problem is that industry requires individuals to not take advantage of it’s popularity and temptations, but this does not only fall on the athlete’s shoulders.

As fans, cheering at contrivance is our responsibility to assist in victories, but this needs to stay there. It is time to stop pointing the finger at athletes without taking some of the blame.

Fans are no better for taking pictures of an individual with only selfish purposes of making money, or admitting to affairs in order to get an Extra correspondent job.

I am a sports fan and I apologize for my fellow fans behaviors.

To my peers, true sports fans do not get a bye off-the-field because of what we are not, so stop embarrassing the rest of us.

What A Decade: Part Two: A Lack Of Respect

Overall the world of sports has taken the biggest hit over the past 10 years. All the achievements and milestones get tarnished.

Headlines, full of scandals, players disregarding the status of being role-models, and the once respected title of professional athlete has taken a fall.

Could the problem be the super-sized contracts used to attract young athletes in a direction before they have even proven their own worth?

It definitely plays a part in it.

Moreover, the fans who make these athletes rich and give them their god-like status feel like players are using them, instead of embracing them.

The trust once based on pure admiration, that was once given without question from fans might never recover to what it once was.

In Part Two of WHAT A DECADE, let’s recap the scandals, which have now crippled the sports world forever.

Here are some of the stories, in which an athlete will be remembered by his person, not his profession:

1) America’s past-time, a sport with a history spanning the last century, and the idea of dad’s taking their sons to a ball-game making it the example for the American family.

Sadly, Major League Baseball took a dive into an empty pool, but still holding an infamous list that somehow still managed to get wet.

Steroids, also known as PED (performance enhancing drugs) were a virus that spread so fast and too easily, becoming a norm across the sport. This was as much as the players faults, as it was MLB’s executives who just turned their heads at any thought of this fact.

Until 2004, their was no written rule in baseball stating what constitutes cheating with regards to PED use, This seems only to have been ignored for baseball’s popularity. By keeping player’s talents and skills on the rise, it enhanced and attracted more fans, which means more money for the sport.

The infamous random drug testing done across baseball in 2003, was supposedly given to prove PED’s overwhelming use. The stories make it sound like it was as common to take steroids, as using Bengay on a sore muscle. Scarily, many players did it right in the locker room and discussions were open dialogues amongst players.

The compiled list of positive players was never to have had names on it. Declared as sealed by the Supreme Court granting the above to forever remain closed and anonymous for its purpose served was for survey use and that is exactly what it did.

Since 2004, the leaking of different names from this list has sparked more tragedy, then a future of hope. These were names like, Roger Clemens, Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez, the most remarkable players to ever play.

The concept of making baseball the clean game it has professed itself being, to finally actually be the truth. For fans hearts broke everywhere and the damage might be too deep to repair but that should make baseball try even harder.

Sadly, players who have done it the right way, now are part of the decade fueled by steroids, not by baseball.

2) Family first, living legend, sponsors like NIKE, Gillette, Tag Heur, Gatorade, Buick was the life of professional golfer Tiger Woods.

This could be renamed, WHAT CAN CHEATING DO FOR YOU?

Woods is most well-known athlete alive today, and probably ever in history.

Athletically, the past decade was magnificent for Tiger. Personally matched that of his golf. He married a gorgeous model and had two beautiful children. Life was not just good for Tiger, it was great.

In the early morning of November 27, 2009 the world got to see a side of Tiger that was so outrageously uncharacteristic, it makes it questionable what had occurred.

Woods had a car accident in front of his house, barefoot and injuries that needed hospital treatment. What unraveled in the aftermath is that our hero was a cheating, pill-pooping husband and father. The image portrays one of a liar and a coward. Tiger has not been seen or heard from since the 10+ women he cheated on his wife with have come forward.

Tiger has only addressed the world via his website, which I doubt he even wrote. One’s real true self in this case are on display for all to judge.

Tiger Woods asks for respect for his privacy of his family, kinda of ironic considering the lack of respect he has shown them. Woods owes the fans who make him rich and popular an explanation. It’s easy being a celebrity when times are good, but it’s not his right to choose when it’s convenient for him.

The teenagers who have his posters on their wall, wear his NIKE clothing and drink his Gatorade drink deserve to hear it from the horse’s mouth. No one disagrees that public figures deserve privacy, but to hide-out makes people get angry. Fans feel used as they should because Tiger is not the man we thought he was.

At least if Woods came forward and spoke to the world as a regular guy who made some horrible choices, he might seem more human. The weekend following that November morning, Woods had his annual golf tournament for his own charity which he didn’t show-up too.

The game of golf itself will take such a nose dive without their greatest player, as Woods has taken a break indefinitely and it all just adds to his total lack of respect.

Tiger Woods will now leave his mark in history as the man who almost was the greatest athlete ever. It’s the way a man loses that makes fans never want to forget.

Sadly, for Tiger maybe he will never have the mental game to play the sport again.

3) The NFL has always had drama off the field about players thinking their above the law. Two players who made the biggest headlines in the past ten years were Plaxico Burress and Michael Vick.

Vick for dog fighting and Burress for shooting himself accidentally.

At the time, Vick was the QB for the Atlanta Falcons and watching him play was like watching ESPN’s plays of the week. Vick was that good. When not playing football, Vick’s hobby was dog fighting. Dog fighting that entailed running a ring in his back yard that housed around a hundred dogs. It was so overwhelming to see that Vick’s disregard for the law and more so for animals was clear.

Vick has now served a three-year sentence and has found a home back in the game that made him so famous, on the Philadelphia Eagles. Thus far Vick is taking the minor role the team has granted him and is thankfully humble about the second chance he has gotten.

For Plaxico, the star wide receiver for the New York Giants just started a three and a half-year sentence that might not have the same ending as Vick.

On November 28, 2008 Plaxico, along with teammate Antonio Pierce was out partying in a night club. For personal protection, Burress had a gun underneath his sweatpants. By utter bad luck, the gun slipped down his sweatpants and went off shooting a through his own leg. Pierce and Burress tried to cover it up by not reporting the incident to police which surely did not help in the long run. The unlicensed gun just added fuel to the fire which lead to Plaxico to the sentence above and his career remains uncertain.

Sadly, a second chance for Burress is not likely due to age and Burress past track record with the law. Hopefully, these examples will be lessons learned for the rest of the NFL to not think they are ever above the law.

4) Michael Phelps smokes not only the competition in the pool but also likes to smoke pot too. Phelps had his picture taken at a party smoking out of a bong on November 6, 2008.

This was just months after winning eight metals in the Beijing Olympic Games and might impact Phelps future participation to add to his collection in the 2012 games. There is a four-year ban for athletes who get caught using drugs by the World Anti-Doping Agency but still have not heard if Phelps will be held accountable.

Phelps’s partying has gotten him in hot water before, as at age 19 a sentencing to a 12 month probation for a DWI.

Phelps took total responsibility and apologized to the world which took major courage for him to do. Since, there have been no other news stories other than swimming related involving Phelps. It is doubtful that his off the field partying will ever be a problem for the swimmer again, as Phelps seemed pretty affected by the incident.

Overall, this headliner is not uncommon for 23 year-olds at a college party. The difference is Phelps knows he is not just a regular guy and owes the world not to behave like one.

5) Remembering how much respect the NBA has lost overall this past decade is pretty upsetting. In 2003 when the sports certified biggest star, LA Lakers Kobe Bryant in trouble. While in Colorado for surgery Kobe got accused of allegedly raping a 19-year old hotel employee.

The only fact here is that they did spend the night together but whether this girl was actually raped or if she just wanted her 2 seconds of fame will go unanswered. Kobe never had to face criminal charges because the woman dropped the charges, but she did not drop the civil case.

The rumored number was around $5 million, which makes the woman’s case very suspect to taking advantage of a situation. Kobe was also married and a father to his first daughter at the time but his wife stuck by his side. In turn Kobe gave his loyal wife a $4 million dollar ring, and later on a re-commitment ceremony of their wedding vows.

Kobe never shied away, as the star held a news conference and was crying as he apologized. Regardless of what actually happened, Kobe admitted to everything upfront and this makes any celebrity a more real character.

Kobe Bryant was human and made a mistake, as no rape charges or trial ever accrued. By no means should this have gone on in the first place, but it did.

If Kobe had dropped out of basketball, locked himself in his home, refused to talk to police and disregarded his family the outcome of his future would have been much different.

Since then, Kobe still married to the same woman, has another daughter and never has his name been involved with off the court antics again.

In 2008 Kobe went on in winning the NBA’s MVP award, took home a gold metal for the USA Men’s Basketball Team and won his fourth championship ring, along with he series MVP honors in 2009 season.

Today, Kobe Bryant sponsors read the power-houses like NIKE, Coca-Cola, Spalding to name a few, and is still kicking butt on the basketball court as the captain of the LA Lakers.

Tiger Woods should take some notes and watch Kobe’s video above.

Well, it’s easy to claim you aren’t a celebrity, but than don’t act like you are one.

It is that simple.

If you want regular-person status than act like one. Athletes and movie stars can avoid the spotlight, if they desire too.

Rarefied Ray

What motivates is the man?

Ray Lewis

Image via Wikipedia

Anyone can deliver a powerful speech or words with the intent for actions to occur. Everyone can talk the talk, it’s easy, it sounds good and maybe even believable for a minute.

What is the answer?

It’s the man who talks through is actions and makes you want to follow by example. Not anyone can walk the walk, by backing up the inspiring hunger that is louder than any words heard. Easier said then done if you play in the National Football League.

In this decade, true, inspiring athletes, who love the game, the competition of their sport are on the decline. It is nearly un-heard, that an athlete carries so much spirit in his heart. Never letting his teammates, nor his fans ever doubt for a second to stop believing.

How could players not want to win playing next to him?

How could anyone not cheer for him when he wins?

No one can and everyone does.

This man is the NFL’s rarefied air. His name is Ray Lewis.

Lewis is the leader of the Baltimore Ravens, at 34 years old, now in his 14th season, he still walks the talk.

If Tony Robbins ever needs a swift kick, Ray Lewis would be the man to do it.

Just turn on a Ravens game about seven minutes before kick-off to view this for yourselves.

The theme is pretty clear, if Ray Lewis is going to do what he says, any player next to him should do better. This a player that is all about team.

Lewis speaks from the heart, with the wisdom, the kill and the belief that winning is not an option, it is a fact. Ray Lewis has never lost a beat. His teammates, his opponents and his fans adore him for it. Lewis speeches are backed-up by his athletic ability on the field. He is one of the best linebacker’s ever to play the game. At the beginning of his career, most NFL scouts were all skeptical about the young Ray Lewis. To play linebacker at 6’1 and weighing 250 lbs just was too small to effective.

Regardless of his critics, in 1996, Lewis entered the NFL Draft after three years playing for the University of Miami, better known as the “U”. In the 1st round, with the 26th pick, the Baltimore Ravens unknowingly changed their franchise’s future for the better.

Since that time all the doubts lay to rest. He is living proof that mind can over come matter and that size is only how you look, not how you think.

Thus far, Lewis has had one of the most successful careers as a defenceman in NFL history. has won best defensive player of the year in 2000 and 2003; has ten Pro-bowl appearances, named an Associated Press All-Pro eight times and only the second linebacker in NFL history to win the Superbowl MVP award. In 2003, a poll taken of NFL coaches selected Lewis as the most dominant player to venture on the field. He is the only defensive player ever featured on the cover of Madden NFL video game.

This is just to name a few of the honors, as expected the list is very long.

For the Ravens, life without Ray Lewis is completely inconceivable, and a time no one wants to ever come. Baltimore ownership made that abundantly clear as Lewis just signed a seven-year deal at the end of last season, keeping him a Raven till 2015.

The work hard, play hard attitude is a blessing to his teammates. Thus it has earned Ray Lewis utter respect across the sports world.

Watching a Ray Lewis performance is something to treasure, because this player is a dying bread on the verge of extinction in the NFL.

A man, a player and a captain, who appreciates the unusual gift that God has given him and embodies that time and by giving everything he’s got day in and day out.

Air Jordan’s Jeter Captain: Two Legends Both Honored

Happening almost simultaneously last Friday night, the sports world witnessed two tremendous athletes accomplish milestones.

Michael Jordan got the highest recognition which no player in the NBA ever deserved more by being inducted into basketball’s Hall of Fame.

The critics came out almost immediately by hacking away at Jordan’s speech and claiming Jeter’s record still does not make him one of the Yankee franchises top five ever.

For myself, goose bumps as tears swelled up in my eyes in complete and utter joy took over. Two men finally getting the credit they so rightly deserve on the same night is historic.

Jordan is considered to be the best athlete ever. He soared on the basketball court with god-like, surreal moves that were just purely amazing.

Jordan’s acceptance speech was as emotional as his play. Clearly he was moved, as his honesty was expressed through his words.

Jordan’s competitiveness both on and off the court is a characteristic that anyone at the top of his or her profession has to have.

The second athlete is more humble when it comes to talent. When it’s MJ as the comparison skill wise being closes behind is inevitable for anyone.

Derek Jeter broke a 72-year-old, Yankee record with his 2722 hit in pinstripes. A record previously held by the great Lou Gehrig.

Yankees stadium was at full capacity with each in attendance excited to witness Jeter achieve this honored. Honor is a familiar term to Jeter but critics immediately did it know justice by focusing on the lack of this record regarding creditability.

Listening to Peter Gammons, a known Red Sox fan, analyze why Jeter is not the greatest Yankee to follow immediately the ESPN poll results of the better Yankee among Mariano or Jeter was heartless.

The same class that Jeter brings not only as the Yankees captain but also to the sport of baseball is irreplaceable. Without Jeter, baseball’s reputation would have no creditability because Jeter is the excuse that the sport is not made up of all cheaters.

Regardless of critics’ opinions, the sports world is at a significant crossroad. Athletes do not respect that honors or attitude is not by word of mouth but by how you play the game. The disrespect or tantrums accompanied with blame will kill the aura of sports popularity.

No one wants to see a cocky kid; with nothing more than a huge contract act lazy or ignore the press because doing what they want to do is all they know.

Jeter and Jordan never act bigger before they were. Putting winning championships as a team before individual accomplishments being the goal. It is evident because each game is played with everything, never lazy and taking it for granted because that is how champions win.

Both men have grace and only contribute to sports with their examples.

“Things happen for a reason” or “timing is everything” are popular quotes for a reason. And Friday night proved the truth behind the words above.

Jeter wearing Air Jordans on the field seems only more suitable.

Each, define the foremost elite of what American athletes of today. My sincerest congratulations and gratitude goes out to both of them.

“Sometimes I dream; That he is me; You’ve got to see that’s how I dream to be.”

3 Players Who Might Get Dumped

It’s safe to say that the Yankees look like a team on the way to the post season.

Other than winning the World Series, the question on the mind of many Yankee fans are will some of these guys not be back in pinstripes next year?

Maybe he is your hero. And looking at your jersey that might don an #18 or #55 on the back, wondering if this player did well enough for the Yanks to keep him?

Quotes like, “passed his prime” or “not the player he once was” is the common theme when these veteran players are in contract years.

But how many players has this been said about in which I am the first to say I was wrong or underestimated someone. For example, Jeter, Abreau, Mussina are a few that come to mind.

It is fact that how far the Yanks take this season; meaning if they go to the post-season (not assuming anything till it happens) is as significant for jobs to be continued. It’s the Yanks and heads will role if the team bombs.

Let’s explore three current Yankees who are playing for more than just the World Series this season.

1) “Positively Damonic” – #18

A Boston Red Sox, who had just come off winning the World Series, breaking the curse of 1918 was going to be a Yankee?

In 2005 Johnny Damon became a Yankee. He was on the top of his game and was going to his rival team where I guess the only thing took away from him was his long hair.

Described as a positive guy who treats everyone from the bat boy to the valet parking his car with complete kindness. Damon was embraced by the Yank fans immediately. His teammates liked him; regardless of the shameless Torre stories that claim differently.
The honest truth is that Damon’s best years might be behind this champ. Damon is still a darn good player and offers a lot.

Plain and simple Damon has a bad arm but that is not new news. It got overlooked because he made dynamic plays in the outfield. It was pure talent and athleticism displayed in everyday but age and injuries inevitably have taken some toll on him.

Clearly Damon can hit and is still one of the best, no doubt. He is good in the post season; just watch game seven of the 2004 World Series to see him at his best.

Damon can rob bases with the best and he is having a good year. I think he will still be good for two more seasons and the Yanks should offer him two years for less money.

We let Abreau go a little to soon. He is worse then Damon ever was in the outfield. Now, as a Angel is getting MVP Award talk, something that the Yanks were sure was over.

If Damon gets another year it gives out young prospect Austin Jackson another season in the minors. Which can help his growth and ease him up to the Majors.

Damon wants to stay a Yankee and I want him in pinstripes again.

2) “It‘s A Thilla For Godzilla” – #55

Hideki Matsui will not comment on what will happen about next year, till this season is over.

He has made it clear he is comfortable in New York. And the Yankee players’ have clearly spoken on the respect they have for his continued professionalism.

The fans adore Matsui. He is a true gentleman and the country of Japan should be proud to have Matsui represent them.

This athlete respects baseball, his teammates and works hard. Yes, Matsui has bad knees but they are improving.
Regardless, Matsui can hit ridiculously well and consistently can be relied on to do so.

Other then Jeter, he is the only other hitter on the Yankees, that is confident in the clutch and with a game’s result on his bat.

The National league will not be jumping to sign him because the DH is not a position.

Stupid for the Yanks to let him face them next season.

Give him one more year for much less money is the option if the season is considered a successful one.

3) Andy Pettitte – #46

This will be short and sweet.

Andy Pettitte will be a Yankee nest year. It will be his choice because this pitcher can still throw and Cashman knows it.

Andy says he has never felt better.

All I can say to that is……“HEY ANDY, it shows!!!”

From The Heart Of A True Yanks Fan: Just A Few Simple Thoughts

Wow! The second half could not be starting out much better then sweeping the Tigers and a walk-off by Matsui to beat the Orioles tonight.

All around the Yankees look solid. Pitching seems to be straightening itself out as Joba pitched great last night. Now maybe he can prove all of us wrong. Joba used all four pitches last night. His fastball was 95 in the first and 97 in the seventh so that speaks volumes for Cashman holding out.

Maybe I should realize that Brian knows what he is doing, some of the time. In addition to his genius I think all the attention on Phil Hughes probably got to Joba’s inflamed head. Hughes became the hero and Joba was the one he was saving. That would sure motivate me to get my act together. Also realizing that the fans and media were starting to not care if I was traded because when you are hurting the team thats not good. And not to admit it afterwards makes an athlete seem entitled and with no past of being productive it it just not going to work.

Over the weekend I was nervous because of the whipping the Yanks got just a week prior. Detroit is a solid ball-club with great hitters and good pitching, with one of the best starters in Velander.

I was encouraged and hopeful for the future of this season. Here are the postitives that have served the Yankees well in the first four days of the second half:

  1. Girardi has rested the pitchers by not overusing the bullpen. Have not totally agreed with every move but all seem healthy and that will be the demise of collapsing teams to come.
  2. Joba has seen the light. I know it is just one start but it is at home where he has struggled. I can say this is expected from Joba because he has been dynamite before so time to show it. Maybe the four days off helped by his family telling him that in order to act like a superstar you have to first be one!
  3. Can anyone get enough of Phil Hughes. Lights-out and for two solid innings against Detroit on saturday cemented him in the fact that this guy came to play. I have always been a Hughes advocate even when he was horrible last year I wore my Hughes shirt with pride cause I could see the potential in his stuff.
  4. Andy Petite will pitch like this the most of the second half. He is of the old school and he knows what is expected of him. Moreover it is what Andy expects of himself and my faith in him does not waiver.
  5. Hopefully Cashman is sitting back with his legs up on the desk until July 31st. Have not heard anything trade-wise and trust me the media would embellish anything regarding Halloday or my Yanks. Please I have nightmares of this grave mistake being made.
  6. The Red Sox are losing and looking at stats of both leagues Boston’s OBP has taken a dive each month. Watch for Theo Epstien to pick up a batter before trade deadline.
  7. I can thank Mark Teixeira for the best quote I have heard in years. That the Yankees will have home field advantage in World Series this year. I cannot find the exact words he said so not in quotes but what a player he is and I commend Teixeira for his spirit.
  8. Alex Rodriguez is not at his full capacity but he sure is getting better and his presence helps for sure.
  9. How important attitude is in regards to sports in general. Especially when you play for the Yankees franchise the pressure is on and it can get the best of you. After th

e Angels took all three I did not know what to think but the worst was definitely looking like a reality of the Yankees I have known the last five years. I am a believer now and that is because if the team is not effected then as a fan I have to let it go, which is much harder to do than one can imagine. Nothing gets this team down and that is amazing to watch as a fan.

I just hope that all the hater Yankees fans start to believe a little more that this is something that is real. For a minute stop trying to find something wrong and relish in the great things that this team is showing each game played.

Old habits are hard to break and no amount of money can truly change someone’s mindset. Money can make someone fake a good thing but its never works. Finding faults is the easiest way out of facing something defeat because change is always the more difficult if at first it fails.

For the not only the haters but for all to learn from, here is one of the greatest athlete’s quote about team:
If people around you aren’t going anywhere, if their dreams are no bigger than hanging out on the corner, or if they’re dragging you down, get rid of them. Negative people can sap your energy so fast, and they can take your dreams from you, too.” – Earvin “Magic” Johnson
