2012 MLB Power Rankings – Week 6

The 2012 MLB season is about to hit the quarter mark, and a lot of teams who were considered ‘playoff contenders’ are still struggling to find their footing.

A lot of baseball fans are counting out the Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Tigers but be warned, there is a ton of baseball left to play and all five of these teams will lean on their experience to pull through in the end.

Still, it is week 6 and Orioles, Indians and Nats fans are living the dream so far. I hope they don’t get to ahead of themselves just yet, but can also enjoy their team’s moment in the spotlight.

Inter-league play is up next and that always makes things more interesting.

AL pitchers love to hit; and NL teams can take advantage of adding a DH to their line-ups.

Overall, the 2012 season has been a blast even if my Yankees are a pain in the RISP….

Here are my power rankings for week 6…..ENJOY!!

And always feel free to give your opinion in a comment.

2012 MLB Power Rankings – Week 1

The first week of the 2012 season was far from boring, as the competition is even better than I realized.

My advice is if you want to make a baseball fan out of someone this is the season to do it but that is for another post.

For now, here are my weekly power rankings…remember weekly isn’t limited to just the past week as I prefer looking at the bigger picture; and comments are just my quick notes.

2012 MLB Team Preview: Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers Logo.

Down in Arlington, Texas the last two years have proven to be optimistic yet frustrating.

Last season marked the Rangers second consecutive, yet unsuccessful trip to the World Series.

The franchise had never gotten past the ALDS before 2010, so winning two consecutive American League pennants in their first two visits means it is no fluke and that this team knows how to compete.

Last season the Rangers finished 96-66, which was the second best record in the American League. And in the AL West they left the competition in the dust, as the next best team was the Angels who were 10 games back.

Will 2012, prove to be another year of celebration in Arlington?

Let’s take a look.

THE POSITIVES:

Overall the Rangers line-up, when healthy, is one of the best in baseball. Playing in hitting friendly Rangers ballpark certainly helps, as the team’s overall batting stats are better at home. In 2011, the Rangers finished with the best batting average in baseball posting a .283, and they were the hardest team to strikeout with 930 on the season. Texas finished second in homers with 210, third in RBIs with 807 and had the second best slugging percentage with .800 on the season. And in Ranger Stadium the team is hard to beat, with a batting average just shy of .300.

The Rangers best player Josh Hamilton had a rough off-season, as he fell off the wagon and the concern meter is on high alert. Hamilton’s past does not allow for any slip-ups, but he did this once before during Spring Training in 2009 and went on to win the AL MVP. Turning a negative into a positive seems to be something Hamilton has become very good at. His shame alone should once again make him strive to prove his worth on the baseball field, maybe not another MVP year but a solid one. Also, Hamilton is a free agent after this season and players tend to rev it up in years before they can hit the market.

MLB Adopts Expanded Format for 2012 Postseason

Two Additional Wild Cards Will Form 10-Team Postseason in 2012, Marking First Change to Postseason Format Since 1994

The 2012 Postseason will feature a 10-team format that includes two additional Wild Card Clubs and an elimination game in each League prior to the Division Series, Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig announced today.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association agreed to the changes to the new Postseason format as a part of last year’s collective bargaining. The new Basic Agreement, announced on November 22nd, provided that MLB and the MLBPA would expand the Postseason no later than 2013; that a second Wild Card would be awarded in both the American League and the National League; and that a single Postseason game would be played between each League’s two Wild Card Clubs, with each winner advancing to compete among the three division champions from each League in the Division Series. Following further discussions to address player concerns, the parties agreed that the new format would be used in 2012.

The change, which was endorsed by the Commissioner’s 14-member Special Committee for On-Field Matters, marks the first amendment to the Postseason since MLB adopted the six-division, eight-team Postseason structure in January of 1994. The first Postseason to be played under that format occurred in 1995.

Commissioner Selig said: “I greatly appreciate the MLBPA’s cooperation in putting the new Postseason format in place this year. The enthusiasm for the 10-team structure among our Clubs, fans and partners has been overwhelming. This change increases the rewards of a division championship and allows two additional markets to experience playoff baseball each year, all while maintaining the most exclusive Postseason in professional sports.”

Michael Weiner, the Executive Director of the MLBPA, said: “The players are eager to begin playing under this new format in 2012 and they look forward to moving to full realignment in 2013. Our negotiating committee and the owners’ representatives worked hard to develop a schedule that should make for fairer competition and provide our fans with a very exciting season.” Continue reading ‘Official MLB Press Release On 2012 Postseason Format’ »

MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement: 9 Changes You Will Want To Know

In efforts to avoid what didn’t happen in 1994, as well as avoiding the path the NBA took, MLB and the MLB Players Association took the bull by the horns to avoid letting the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expire on December 11, 2011.

And that hard work has paid off, as MLB has a new (CBA) that lasts through 2016. This translates into nonstop play for the next 5 seasons, which makes it the longest agreement deal in history.

So, what changes in the new CBA would the everyday baseball fan want to know?

After reading about the new CBA, here are 9 points that a typical baseball fan might want to take note of:

2011 Silver Slugger Awards Included Two New York Yankees

After getting snubbed from the Gold Gloves, two New York Yankees were recipients of a 2011 Silver Slugger Award.

So congratulations are in order, for outfielder Curtis Granderson and second baseman Robinson Cano who both consistently produced at the plate throughout the 2011 season. The Yankees also owe HUGE thanks to batting coach Kevin Long, who has been instrumental in the entire team’s success at the plate.

Here are all of the MLB players who were named 2011 Silver Sluggers:

NATIONAL LEAGUE:

CONGRATULATIONS to all the  Silver Sluggers for swinging the hottest bats in the 2011 season!!!
