New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Francisco Liriano have been named the American League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for April.

In 22 games last month, Cano hit a Major League-best .400 (34-85) with five doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 21 runs scored and 18 RBI. The 27-year-old also posted a .765 slugging percentage and a .436 on-base percentage. He is one of just four Yankees in the expansion era (since 1961) to bat .400 in April (min: 50 PA), joining Clete Boyer (1962), Willie Randolph (1976) and Paul O’Neill (1994, ’96). The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic reached base successfully in 21 of his 22 games in April, which included 11 multi-hit games and four multi-RBI performances. Cano also amassed two multi-homer games in April, extending his career total to six. Robinson became just the second American Leaguer to record a .400 average and eight home runs in the month of April in the expansion era, joining Boston’s Manny Ramirez in 2001. On April 24th, the lefty-hitting slugger collected four hits and three runs scored to match career-high’s en route to a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. On the strength of his 10-game season-opening hitting streak, Cano extended his April hitting streak to 27 games, dating back to last season, the longest such streak in A.L. history. This marks Robinson’s second career Player of the Month Award (previous: September 2006).

Liriano, who posted a perfect 3-0 record in four outings to start the season, surrendered just three earned runs on 18 hits over 29.0 innings pitched. The native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic posted a 0.93 ERA, making him the only starting pitcher in the American League to earn a sub-1.00 ERA for the month of April. On April 27th at Detroit, Liriano set a season-high mark with 10 strikeouts, extending his April total to 27. Francisco’s 10 strikeouts marked his most in a game since collecting 12 on July 28, 2006, which earned him A.L. Rookie of the Month honors. In that same outing, the 26-year-old carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished the game with just four hits allowed, tying his season low. The southpaw hurler finished the month of April with a career-high 23.0 scoreless innings streak, second only to Johan Santana (33.0 IP, 2004) in club history since 1993. The 2006 A.L. All-Star did not allow a home run in the month of April and is currently in possession of a 38.1-inning homerless streak, dating back to September 27, 2009. This marks Francisco’s first Pitcher of the Month honor.

The runner up for the A.L. Player of the Month was Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who batted .344, hit eight home runs and led the Majors with 25 RBI. Finishing second to Liriano in the A.L. Pitcher of the Month balloting was Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Matt Garza, who posted a 4-1 record with a 2.06 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 35.0 innings pitched.

Cano and Liriano will each receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate their Player and Pitcher of the Month performances.
