MLB Batter Vs. Batter: Which Superstar Would You Choose

Pretend it is the middle of MLB’s off-season, and you are hard at work as most General Managers are at this time of year.

Significant decisions are looming and need to be made sooner than later, as your team’s forthcoming success depends on it.

Now, below are the stats of two currently active MLB hitting superstars, but the hitch is you can only sign one. The players and stats are real, but the each player’s name, respective team and year are all crossed out in order for you to make an unbiased decision.

You won’t be discouraged, that much I can promise you.

Once you are finished, please leave your decision, via a comment and hopefully an explanation at the end of this post. Presumably, each pick will be your opinion of who is the better player as you are trying to put the best team together possible to win.

Before disclosing any true identities, let me give you the three reasons why I would sign PLAYER 1 over PLAYER 2.

  1. PLAYER 1 is just as lethal once on base as clear from his stolen base numbers. PLAYER 1 also has 57 more RBIs.
  2. PLAYER 2 doesn’t strikeout much, but my guess is that he gets intentionally walked a bit when looking at his base-on-balls numbers.
  3. PLAYER 1′s most recent numbers season shows improvement, while almost all PLAYER 2’s stats declined in his last season. This does not mean that PLAYER 2 can’t be productive again, as he could have had an off-year but PLAYER 1 hasn’t shown that kind of drop off. This leads me to believe that PLAYER 1  is the safer bet.

PLEASE WAIT once you click… ‘Continue Reading MLB Batter Vs. Batter: Which Superstar Would You Choose’…. the two real owners of these stats shale be revealed.

*It is recommended that you make your choice prior to knowing each player’s true identity. As a team’s GM, intentionally hindering a decision instead of doing what is best for the team is selfish, so try to decide before you peak. You have been warned.* Continue reading ‘MLB Batter Vs. New York Yankees: CC Sabathia Opts To Stay

CC Sabathia

Image via Wikipedia

If you haven’t heard the good news start spreading it, as CC Sabathia is staying a New York Yankee.

All it took was adding another year (with an option of adding a second) and $30 million rise.

Sabathia’s new contract, which supersedes the remaining four years and $92 million left his original contract, is for five years at $122 million.

The 31-year old lefty will earn $25 million in 2016, which is the last  guaranteed year of the new contract, but there is a sixth ear vesting option for another $25 million or a team buyout for $5 million, but that depends on health etc. So ultimately Sabathia could rake in another $147 million in total.

Yankee fans are ecstatic about keeping their ace, while avoiding any repeat of the drama that ensued from last year’s off-season.

This is not the outcome that anyone expected after SI.com’s Jon Heyman reported that Sabathia was definitely opting out and planned on becoming a free agent before Monday’s deadline.

Maybe in the future Mr. Heyman should check his anonymous sources credibility before making such declarations and sending Yankee Universe into a tailspin. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: CC Sabathia Opts To Stay’ »

New York Yankees: Sabathia To Opt Out Tonight

The latest news is that the New York Yankees have made a new contract offer to ace CC Sabathia.

CC Sabathia

NY Times David Waldstein got confirmation that the offer was made over the weekend, but the unidentified source would not give specifics.

All MLB player and club options expire at midnight tonight, and according to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Sabathia is going to opt-out of the remaining four years and $92 million left on his original seven-year, $161 million contract. Sabathia is going to hit the free agent market.

After talking to some New York fans, all were on board that tacking on more money and years to Sabathia’s contract was the right thing to do.

So, knowing the situation it is easy to presume that the Yankees offer was lucrative.

I know that Sabathia retracted past statements about how he would not opt out, and everyone understands that he should get a new deal with more years etc. I just assumed that if Yankees made an offer, Sabathia would sign on the dotted line.

Where I went wrong was thinking the opting out part would only be exercised if the Yankees were being stubborn. And why wouldn’t I after listening to Sabathia state how much he loves New York, the fans, and blah-blah-blah. It seemed exercising the opt out would be Sabathia’s last straw. Yankees Pick Up Options On Cano And Swisher

Nick Swisher salutes the crowd during roll cal...

It hasn’t even been 24-hours since the St. Louis Cardinals won the 2011 World Series, and the New York Yankees are already hard at work, getting ready for 2012 season.

The latest since the 6 ½ hours of executive meetings in Tampa, FL last Wednesday is that the Yankees picked up outfielder Nick Swisher’s $10.5 million dollar option.

Even though Swish has struggled in October, he has consistently produced offensively in the regular season. Since joining the Yankees in 2009, Swish gets on-base with a .368 OBP, and a total of 250 walks, 256 RBIs, 81 home-runs and 98 doubles in 1590 at-bats.

Swish has become a sergeant to the infamous Bleacher Creatures who span the right outfield at every Yankees home game. It is still a possibility that Swish gets traded before 2012 season, but with Swish’s persona becoming so important to the clubhouse’s atmosphere I doubt it will happen.

The other announcement comes as no surprise, as the Yankees have exercised Robinson Cano’s contract extension, which keeps the All-Star second baseman in pinstripes through 2013. Cano will earn $14 million in 2012 and $15 million in 2013, which is a major bargain considering Cano’s rising star as a top player in baseball.

So, now Yankee fans will have to just wait and hope that ESPN’s Andrew Marchand and New York Times David Waldstein claims are correct. As both reported that the Yankees are doing everything possible to keep ace CC Sabathia from opting out of his seven-year, $161 million contract, which still has four-years and $92 million left. Congratulations To The St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina celebrates after Game 7 of baseball's World Series against the Texas Rangers Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, in St. Louis. The Cardinals won 6-2 to win the series. - YAHOO SPORTS

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals for winning the 2011 World Series.

The Cardinals gave baseball fans a truly thrilling ride because of how they believed in themselves.

From Carpenter to Motte; from Pujols to the MVP Freese; from Molina to manager Tony LaRussa… this was not one player or two, it was a complete team effort; and that is what defines a true champion.

The Cardinals were inspiring to watch and they reminded me why I love the game of baseball all over again.

So, thank you, and again… Congratulations to 2011 World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals!

WS Game 6 Was A Baseball Masterpiece

David Freese

The 2011 World Series had been a snooze, until last nights Game 6.

The game was far from perfect, way too much sloppy defense and both the Rangers and Cardinals reliable bullpens finally looked worn.

The imperfect, textbook mistakes aren’t what made this game so good; the attitudes and fight of the Cardinals and the Rangers did.

Anytime the underdog team fights to the last strike, with the World Series on the line and a hometown guy like David Freese hits a walk-off homerun it strikes up an uncontrolled emotion in anyone who calls themselves a fan of baseball.

This was an 11-inning, baseball masterpiece, and one of the best postseason games in history. All the imperfections in this 10-9 Cardinal win was what made the game so perfect.

All I can say is that I could not be happier for the baseball itself because fans fell in love all over again.

Game 7 is sure to be another fight to end and to repeat the words of FOX SPORTS and MLB Network Intentional Talk host Chris Rose:

“If you are not watching this thing tomorrow night you are not a sports fan.”

I will repeat my sentiments from my WS preview of the St. Louis Cardinals, there is something special going on in St. Louis.

2011 WS: Rangers And Cardinals Enough Excuses

There were no celebrations in St. Louis on Wednesday night, as Mother Nature elected to drag out the 2011 World Series for another day, as Game 6 was officially postponed to Thursday.

Currently the Texas Rangers have a 3-2 hold-on the Cardinals, making Game 6 a must win for St. Louis.

As for Texas, winning Game 6 would be a first, as the championship trophy has never called Arlington home in Rangers franchise history.

On paper this World Series would seem compelling, with all the pitching changes and the close scoring games but for some reason it is not.

Sorry to say but baseball fans can only blame the Cardinals and Rangers for making this Fall so un-classic.

Never has there been more excuses made by the two teams playing in the World Series.

From having to hear about how much of hero Josh Hamilton is for playing injured; to star players snubbing the media in the postgame; and the icing on the cake was when the Cardinals blamed a game costing mistake on not being able to communicate properly from the dugout to bullpen.

All this blah-blah-blah has accomplished is making the Rangers and the Cardinals come-off as soft, and a bit like sore-losers. And this might be why MLB cancelled Game 6 at 2pm based on a chance of rain, as these teams are way to fragile. Continue reading ‘2011 WS: Rangers And Cardinals Enough Excuses’ »
