MLB Trade Rumors: New York Mets Should Not Trade A Keeper

New York Mets SS - José Reyes

As a New York Yankees fan, I keep tabs on what the ‘other’ New York team is up too; and the Mets have made that pretty easy because it hasn’t been much the last few seasons, until now.

All of this is starting to change over in Queens, as the right skipper and GM are finally on board to right this sinking ship.

GM Sandy Alderson has already started cleaning house by releasing clubhouse viruses Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez, knowing that the two would stay on the Mets payroll through the season for a combined $18 million.

Has it turned the Mets around?

No, not even close but it is a start in the right direction for a team that seemed to never catch a break. The next few moves will be critical in how fast the team plans in getting there.

So, the rumors have continued with MLB Trade Rumors sending Mets fans into a tailspin, reporting the likelihood of Carlos Delgado going to the Yankees, to feasibly trading David Wright. Still, the one rumor that could have the most truth behind it is the same one I deem outrageous, which is that the Mets would trade shortstop Jose Reyes.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe recently reported this:

Jose Reyes, SS, Mets — The clock keeps ticking on when he will switch uniforms. The Mets called up their latest infield phenom, 21-year-old Ruben Tejada, last week and will play him at second base while Justin Turner plays third in David Wright’s absence. The fly in the ointment is whether the Mets will hold on to Reyes as long as possible because of Wright’s injury (stress fracture in his back), but an American League scout said, “If they hear the right deal, they do it. They can’t afford not to and let him leave as a free agent and not get value for him.’’

After finally getting the opportunity to watch Reyes, as he spent most of 2010 on the DL, I got reminded just how talented the 27-year-old is and quickly. Continue reading ‘MLB Trade Rumors: New York Mets Should Not Trade A Keeper’ »

New York Yankees: Playing Small Works Out Big To Win Subway Series In Bronx

Cap logo of the New York Yankees

The Subway Series and New York City bragging rights were at stake on Sunday afternoon, as the outcome of the rubber match between the Yankees and Mets got decided in one heck of a 7th inning up in the Bronx:

  • Entering the 7th inning, the Yankees were down 3-1 to the Mets, with no real signs of hope.
  • The one on the scoreboard came off another Curtis Granderson home-run in the 1st inning, but otherwise it was the same old stranding runners-on-base.
  • The Captain came up clutch with a double that drove in the two runs that tied the game 3-3.
  • Curtis Granderson has 16 home-runs, but the guy is just lethal with the bat period. His sacrifice bunt was perfectly knocked down the third-base line, setting up the go-ahead-run.
  • After the Mets walked Mark Teixeira, A-Rod hit a blooper that but ran his heart out and the meager hit was enough for the run to score to put the Yankees on top.
  • 13 Yankees hitters produced five singles, two walks, one double, and a sacrifice in this brilliant inning of small-ball.
  • Not one of the total eight runs scored in 7th came off a home-run.

Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reported that was the inning the Yankees have been looking for according to A-Rod who he quoted saying:

“There were a lot of good things that happened in that inning, starting with Gardy, and Dickerson drew a nice walk, a perfect base hit by Jeter and a perfect bunt by Granderson. That sets up the big inning and those are the things we haven’t been doing the last few weeks. We can’t hit a three-run homer every time.”

The Mets only managed to score three runs off the 11 total hits they had off Yankees rookie Ivan Nova.

The Yankees beat the Mets 9-3, taking the rubber game and the series 2-1.

Now Yankee fans can look toward the Empire State Building, as it will be glowing of pinstripes for the next few nights.

New York Yankees: Pitching vs. Mets Schedule

Here are the probable pitchers for this weekends Subway Series at Yankee Stadium:

Freddy Garcia (2-3, 3.22) vs. R.A. Dickey (1-5, 5.08)

Tonight (My9 HD, 7 p.m.)

THINGS TO NOTE:

  • Both the Mets and Yankees are playing good baseball.
  • The Yankees line-up is hot right now beating up the Baltimore Orioles 25-5 in runs total in their last two games.
  • The Mets have won nine of their last 13 games.
  • The Mets will be sans 1B Ike Davis and 3B David Wright.
  • Judging by how much broader Citi-Field is the Amazins could have a field day in the stunted, homer-friendly Yankee Stadium.
  • Both of Friday’s starters, Dickey and Garcia are coming off their worst performances of the season and neither pitcher has any significant familiarity with the others line-ups.
  • Dickey’s knuckleball has been flat lately and if he can’t keep it down Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano will feast on it.
  • In the eight at-bats against Dickey, A-Rod is batting .625, with five hits; Gardner is two for three, with a triple, two RBIs and .667 batting average.
  • Dickey has yet to give-up a home-run to any of the Yankees he will be facing on Friday night.
  • Garcia has to watch out for the blazing bat of Carlos Beltran, who just hit three-homers in one game against the Colorado Rockies. Beltran has faced Garcia 31 times, batting a .452, with 10 RBIs, three home-runs, two doubles and a triple.

UP NEXT……

A.J. Burnett (4-3, 3.99) vs. Chris Capuano (3-4, 4.78)

Saturday (FOX, 7 p.m.)

Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.33) vs. Mike Pelfrey (3-3, 5.11)

Sunday (YES HD, 1 p.m.)

Subway Series: Yankees vs. Mets Back In The New York Groove

Branded as the Big Apple and the Capital of the World, New York City is undeniably a very extraordinary place.

As a real New Yorker (born in Manhattan), I can say that when it comes to our city’s pro-sports teams it would be a challenge to find a more prideful and demanding bunch of fans.

New York fans have earned a reputation for a win or get-off the pot attitude, which has made our sports teams less popular everywhere else.

So, when two New York teams face-off, like the Mets and Yankees will in the Subway Series this weekend, it is a fight for the city’s pride.

Here is a little “New York Groove” slideshow of random Yankee pictures, by ladylove pinstripes.com….enjoy!

The victor of this three game set get to gloat because the Empire State Building will adorn the colors of that team for all to see.

For a Mets fan, winning the Subway Series provides the last shred of superiority over the big, bad and successful Yankees.

The Yankees have owned the NYC for over a decade, but that comes with as many haters as it does fans. That doesn’t mean that winning the Subway Series is not a meaningful because it is not just another series.

Someone just said to me that it is another b-l-e-e-p for the Yankees to add to their ever-growing list of successes, but as a New Yorker when your team wins you get to walk with your head a little higher come Monday morning.

As the Yankees return to the Bronx after winning three of four games on the road, they are feeling pretty confident as they prepare to host their cross-town rivals from Queens.

With bragging rights up for grabs, everyone in New York will be busting out their caps, t-shirts and jerseys with their loyalty proudly on full-display.

Even though the Yankees have a much better team on paper, the 2011 Mets are finally heading in the right direction after years of going backwards.

Mets fans know they have a good team; with an inspiriting new skipper and a GM who is determined to get the franchise back to the top.

The Subway Series’ are never short on drama, and if you want to see New York’s spirit at its peak going to the Subway Series is a darn good example of it.

There is a reason the New York Times referred to the Subway Series as “George Steinbrenner’s personal World Series.”

Pitching previews to follow…..

MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Not Trading Any Player To Yankees Ever

The popular trade-debate regarding the New York Mets and who was for sale out in Queens has been a hot topic around baseball.

Some media have suggested the New York Yankees as possible suitors, this speculation seemed a bit far fetched but let’s take a look at the ‘Other New York‘ team.

Who’s Been Mentioned?

  • 3B David Wright which is highly unlikely. The Mets fanbase has been through enough that losing the face of their franchise could be the straw that breaks the camels back, translation it would be a bad move.
  • SS Jose Reyes should start packing because he was going to San Francisco according to Mychael Urban at CSNBayArea.com, the Giants have had major discussions about Reyes but that doesn’t mean the Mets are on board. This trade makes more sense than Wright but I still doubt that Reyes will be going anywhere.
  • K-rod, the Mets closer has been mentioned to be open for discussion, but that would leave a huge whole for the Mets in their most constant and secure area. K-rod has seven saves so far in 2011 and his monster contract will be a hard sell anyway.
  • SportsNite is one of the better local and national sports shows speculated that Carlos Beltran would be a nice addition to an AL team who might be in need of a DH. The problem is Beltran would be a costly DH as the new owners would have to pay the remainder of Beltran’s $18.5 million left of his 2011 paycheck.

Who Could Go?

Out of all four of the above the only player that makes sense for the Mets is Beltran, but rumor has it that Reyes might actually be the front runner.

Does it make sense for another team to pay $10-12 million, plus give the Mets some rookie arms for a DH?

Beltran would be a perfect fit for the Tampa Bay Rays but that would be adding a fourth more to their $41 million dollar payroll, so that is NOT going to happen.

One of the hosts of SportsNite suggested the New York Yankees as a potential Beltran suitor, which I find absolutely preposterous and was shocked by the dumb idea.

First, just because the Yankees have money doesn’t mean that any free agent or trade that comes with a hefty salary would be a good fit in the Bronx.

The point by SportsNite host was that Jorge Posada was not producing in his new role as the Yankees DH and the Yankees could use Beltran.

That is true, but the Yankees will promote rookie Jesus Montero for free way before any $10+ million DH is going to be signed. The Bombers, minus a recent cold streak, are hitting harder than ever so this would seem like an extravagant and just plain stupid move that I can promise you will NEVER happen.

Regarding Reyes, who will play shortstop for the Amazins? And isn’t that kind of throwing in the towel early?

No doubt things are not going awesome in Queens but to give up Reyes who is finally healthy is a bit discouraging. Maybe if the Mets had a stacked farm system with talented prospects, but just disheartening for Mets fans.

Yahoo reported that the team’s ace Johan Santana said to be way ahead in his rehab. Mets General manager Sandy Alderson said this after hearing talking to the doctors:

“If you do the math, that gets you into the end of June, the first part or middle part of July.”

Bottom line is there is absolutely no way the Mets are going to help the Yankees in any way, ever that could lead to World Series #28.

Talk about riots, Mets fans would go ballistic until they grabbed their new Yankee jerseys and never looked back.

2011 MLB Season: Top 9 Headlines After Two Weeks Of Drama

It is hard to believe that the 2011 MLB season is only a tad over two weeks old, as the drama could be deemed season-worthy already.

What story-lines have really shocked baseball fans?

Here are the top 9 headlines (with my comments) that could make baseball worthy of it’s own soap opera, now that the MLB Network just aired baseball’s first official reality series. Please, click on the titles to go to the actual articles, trust me it is well worth it.

  1. A.J. Burnett Has More Wins Than the Boston Red Sox – Come on now, is it possible that every baseball expert on earth couldn’t have seen this one coming. Rethinking strategy? Next time watch what happens after “THE DECISION” before making one.
  2. Charlie Sheen to Red Sox fans: ‘Relax’ – Red Sox fans felt much better and finally could relax after hearing from the man who deemed himself the biggest winner ever, lives with goddesses and is the ultimate poster boy of why you should never touch drugs. Sheen says worries over, time to panic.
  3. Wait, WHO is Leading the Central??? – Is it possible that Royals and Indians will continue like this past April? Doubtful but these days crazier things have happened, like trading an entire team for A-rod would barely reduce salary at all?
  4. Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski Knock Baseball Smack-Talking Out of the Park – who are the AD Wizards that came up with this one? Thank you New Era!!!
  5. The 2011 New York Mets: They rearranged the deck chairs – is it possible that a team could get any worse? I guess Madoff involvement wasn’t rock bottom. Up next…. Mr. Met head gets knocked off and Manny Ramirez is inside?
  6. 2011 Walk Off Hits – everybody’s doing it, as the number of walk off wins so far is ridiculous. Can anyone say YEAR OF THE WALK OFFS?
  7. Showtime offers glimpse of new show featuring World Series-winning Giants – FYI HBO’s HARD KNOCKS ONLY films during pre-season camp. There was NEVER filming during the regular season, as once things started cameras were off. That bullshit ‘glimpse’ is a ploy to get the players to drop their inhibitions, my advice is be careful cause instead of being the less-talked about on the East Coast, you are going to become a joke too. If the 2010 Champs want East Coast attention REPEAT.
  8. Monday Morning Shortstop: The Colorado Rockies, Baseball’s Best Team? – No question that the Rockies are the best team so far, but by a lot. No distractions, all business was the message the Rockies spoke during Spring Training. The Rockies are walking the talk and making some noise among East Coast fans, aka. Yankee fans know you are coming to the Bronx soon and they can’t wait.
  9. This Time, Manny Is Fleeing MannyManny never loved baseball like baseball loved Manny. It was a sad day for the sport and not the way fans wanted to say goodbye.

New York Yankee Rumors: Oliver Perez Going From Queens To The Bronx

The New York Mets finally did what was thought to be the inevitable by cutting ties with pitcher Oliver Perez.

For any team, especially one in a financial mess like the Mets, it takes a lot to sever ties with a player who will still be on the payroll for $12 million.

Perez is actually second Met of the week to be kicked to the curb. Luis Castillo was sent packing just a few days prior, as the Mets are finally doing some spring-cleaning.

This was a long time coming for Perez, as he was literally wasting a roaster spot. Perez had diminished velocity and a complete inability to throw strikes, making him totally ineffective, costing the team wins.

He does throw from the coveted left side, so sending to the bullpen, as a lefty specialist was the last resort. Perez imploded, as lefty hitters crushed everything he threw.

Last season, the Mets wanted to help Perez right himself again by sending him to minors to work on changing his mechanics.

Many MLB pitchers have to change their delivery as they get older and usually they can still be effective even with the drop in velocity. Problem was Perez just turned 29 years old, meaning he was 28 back then and most players are amid their prime still.

This all doesn’t matter as Perez refused to go to the minors, leaving the Mets to claim Perez was injured just to get him off the roaster and onto the DL. What a stellar attitude.

Not only lacking talent, Perez is a horrible teammate.

Last year, I read an article by Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com about the Mets visit to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to lift the spirits of injured war veterans.

Perez just didn’t show up to the team charity event and his excuse was:

“I don’t like to see people like that, so I never go there. Sometimes you see people with no legs, no arms. I don’t like to see that.”

That is just horrible, as all MLB teams do a ton of charity work. Professional athletes like to give back and for a wounded vet to meet famous athletes could be a dream come true. Perez showed his true colors and Mets fans hatred towards him was well justified.

Knowing all this I understood why Mets fans have been adamant about getting rid of Perez.

So you can understand my absolute disgust when MLB Trade Rumors headline read Yankees Have Some Interest In Oliver Perez. The original source of this torrid rumor came via twitter from Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, who tweeted:

Yankees people have discussed ollie as cheap sign. Initial read: cashman not that enthused. Dbacks, w towers ties, best hope?

This is absolutely embarrassing for the Yankees. To be even associate with a guy like Perez in the same sentence is not cool.

Just like Cashman, I was not enthused by this whole rumor either and hopefully will never have to hear of Perez anywhere in New York again.
