ALDS Game Three: Yankees Lose To Tigers, But TBS Announcers Were Awful

First of all, I started writing this in the middle of Game 3 in the ALDS between the Yankees and Tigers.

Verlander has lived up to his CY Young reputation of the game, and now the Tigers just won 5-4 and what a great game played by both teams.

But this is not about the outcome of the game; it is about the TBS announcers I had to endure throughout it.

Three of the TBS crew consists of Brian Anderson, John Smoltz and Ron Darling, which translates into one failed Golf Channel announcer (Anderson), one ex-Brave/Red Sox (Smoltz), one ex-Met (Darling).

Whoever put that group together for this series should be fired. I mean Mets fans cannot even listen to Darling do home games in Queens.

Obviously as a Yankee fan, but also as a baseball fan the rah-rah Tigers and antiYankees was an absolute atrocity. It went along great with the two different strike zones the homeplate umpire had, with the Yankees being smaller than the Tigers.

I happened to be watching this game with a die-hard Phillies fan friend, and he described the announcing as “worse than listening to FOX’s Joe Buck.” And he also acknowledged, “I thought the Phillies got it bad, but that this was the most obvious hating he had ever heard.”

This commentating sounded more like a Tigers fan club meeting, or an anti-Yankees protester group. Look, I get that Darling and Smoltz probably can’t help themselves for obvious reasons, but the blame falls on TBS.

It is expected that a broadcasting station should be able to figure out a how to put together an even-keeled and neutral bunch of hosts.

As far as I am concerned, MLB should not sell TBS the rights to the postseason ever again. It is just total crap and it is not fun to listen to the announcers’ give zero credit to one team, but at the same time defend and excuse every mistake made by the other. New York Yankees: Want To Know Who Will Be Starting Game 4?

The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers leave the Bronx tied at one game apiece, as the ALDS heads to Comerica Park for the next two match-ups.

With Game 3 featuring both teams’ aces, CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander, who were the original Game 1 starters until Mother Nature stopped the battle after an inning and a half, Yankee fans were awaiting the news of who would start Game 4 on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Ian Begley reported that Yankees skipper Joe Girardi officially named A.J. Burnett as his starter in Game 4 of the ALDS for the New York Yankees.

So, now you know Yankee fans and personally I have to mull over this news for a night.

I will leave Yankee fans with this…

Let’s say the Yankees lose Game 3, is AJ Burnett the most suitable starter in a do, or you can kiss the postseason goodbye game situation????

New York Yankees: Losing But Not The Losers

No baseball fan could dream up a better finish to the regular season that is unless you are a Boston Red Sox, or Atlanta Braves fan.

Over the last month we saw the mighty Red Sox go from leading the AL East to destination unknown. It was hard to watch, even as a Yankee fan because truthfully I felt bad, the same way I did for the Mets in 2007.

This was the Red Sox team that Sports Illustrated proclaimed would win 100 games, on route to winning another World Series Championship in the magazine’s annual Baseball Preview issue.

Just try to conceive the mutiny that must be going on at ESPN?

ESPN is the sports equivalent of CNN, and minus my favorite expert Skip Bayless, the kitten caboodle made up of ex-players and the game’s most respected analysts must be in shock. Just Gordon Edes’ bold predictions alone are enough for any network to hang their heads in shame.

And let’s not forget about ESPN’s predicting machine that simulates a full season of 162 games, for all 30 teams and it picked the Red Sox too. Just read my preseason article, ESPN’s Baseball Machine Even Hates The Yankees to see exactly what a robot that was MADE IN BEANTOWN forecasted for this 2011 MLB season.

Truthfully, at the start of this historical Wednesday all my pity and heartfelt sentiments for my Yankees hated rivals had still not completely out the window.  The real moment it did was at the top of the 2nd inning; with two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Mark Teixeira had to go to hit a grand slam of ace David Price. And suddenly the scoreboard read 5-0; and I wanted the Yankees to lose.

Call me whatever you want because I deserve it. Anyone with a brain knows that the Yankees would be better off in the ALCS playing a team who went 7-20 in September, over a hot team like Tampa Bay who went 17-10 respectively; but during this game I did not care. Tonight baseball nation will be watching, as four teams will be battling but not against each other for the last two coveted Wild Card postseason spots.

In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays (90-71) are tied with the Boston Red Sox (90-71) so if both teams win or lose there will be a sudden death game played tomorrow between these to AL East powerhouses.

Same scenario in the National League, as the Atlanta Braves (89-72) and St. Louis Cardinals (89-72) are both striving to clinch a playoff berth tonight, but if tied the two will also duel it out against each other tomorrow to determine the winner.

This is about as good as it gets for baseball fans, and if you have any friends who are on the fence about loving America’s Pastime this would be the night to make sure they are tuned in.

Here is the TV schedule for tonight’s match-ups courtesy of MLB.com (EST listed):

Wed, Sep 28 7:05 pm Boston Red Sox Baltimore Orioles ESPN

New York Yankees: Fans Say On Road To A Championship

Baseball fans everywhere have spoken and New York Yankees was their answer.

At least according to the Marist Poll’s latest nationwide survey conducted on September 13th and September 14th, where baseball fans were asked who they favored to win the 2011 World Series.

The Marist Poll results were reported as follows:

Well there is a lot of baseball to be played before the World Series Champs hoist a trophy up.

As a Yankee fan, I can’t deny that the added faith from this poll isn’t agreeable, but it is undoubtedly unexpected. Not many baseball analysts, fans and even the Yankees own GM Brain Cashman thought the 2011 Yankees were the complete package. Assuming That New York Yankees Are Resting CC Sabathia Too Much

Back on August 6th, the New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi decided to expand the standard five-man pitching rotation to six.

Looking at the rotation with veterans Freddie Garcia and Bartolo Colon, an unstable AJ Burnett and Phil Hughes and the young phenom Ivan Nova, the added day-off made sense considering each start was a performance crapshoot.

Garcia and Colon were stumbling a bit, but Burnett was once again a mental case. So, instead of removing AJ from the regular rotation, Girardi added the extra day off hoping to right Burnett for the playoffs.

Problem is that somewhere keeping ace CC Sabathia comfortable get lost in the shuffle? He is easily one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball, and his performance needs got tossed aside so easily.

Sabathia is an unswerving, dependable workhorse who gets better as the season gets deeper. Watching Sabathia over the last three years, I have learned it takes him a few starts in April to get his arm going; and about one start after the All-Star Break to get himself back into his pitching routine.

Basically, Sabathia relies heavily on consistency of schedule and over the last 11 seasons that has been used to pitching every fifth-day.

Since August 1st, Sabathia has made 10 starts and there is no denying that something is not right; as over that time the Yankees finished 5-5, while CC has racked up three losses, four wins and three no-decisions. Sabathia has given up 11 home-runs, compared to six total in the first four months of the season.

Looking at just the month of August, CC made just six starts. He gave up 56 hits, 22 earned runs, posting a 4.68 ERA and batters were hitting .331 against the big lefty. Without question one of the worst months in his career.

Whether you can dock a few of the added days in-between CC’s starts to erratic weather; or just a decision made by Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild is now irrelevant, as it is a fact that CC Sabathia clearly excels from a typical routine.

So my question for the Yankees is why didn’t they work the schedule to make sure Sabathia pitches every fifth day…. no matter what? Call me crazy, but that seemed to be the impression that I got at the beginning of the season.

Bottom line…. Sabathia is this team’s rock, and keeping him sharp on the hill would presumably be a huge priority for the Yankees heading into the postseason. Continue reading ‘Assuming That New York Yankees Are Resting CC Sabathia Too Much’ »

New York Yankees: Red Sox Are Still Alive

The New York Yankees have had a lot to smile about this past week, from winning the AL East division to fortifying home field advantage for the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Knocking the Boston Red Sox out of the top spot in the AL Wild Card would have been the icing on the cake, but after fighting for 14-innings in the second game of a double-header that mission failed.

Now with three games left in the regular season, the Red Sox remain a game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card standings.

Why should any Yankee fan be complaining?

Worried would be the more proper word because back on September 1st, the Red Sox were the team atop the AL East. On September 2nd, the Yankees stole first place and never looked back but with a nine game lead in the Wild Card it seemed inevitable that Boston would still be around in October.

That is until Boston broke a franchise record for the worst September slump by losing 18 of the next 24 games.

Still, the Red Sox fought hard to beat the Yankees last night and that might have been just what the doctor ordered.

If you recall the Red Sox started the season 0-7 until they swept the Yankees in Fenway Park and Boston started beating everyone.

Let’s hope history does not repeat itself in this case; or in the case of Yankees ace CC Sabathia not making a start for two weeks before taking the hill in Game One of the ALDS next Friday night.

Ironically, the Yankees will finish the season down in Tampa Bay for a three game set against the Rays. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Red Sox Are Still Alive’ »
