New York Yankees: Mid-spring injury updates

Mid-Spring Injury Updates

Injuries are not what anyone wants to hear, read or speak about but they are an unfortunate reality that is unavoidable.

Unlike other sports, MLB has the 70 Spring Training games to play before the start to the ones that count and as players warm up their bodies to prepare for the grueling regular season, injuries can start to stockpile.

So far in Tampa, the New York Yankees haven’t had any big blows but plenty of players are banged up, but things can change in a nanosecond.

Reliever David Robertson gave Yankee Universe their first spring panic attack when he fell down the stairs and was seen in a walking boot the next day. Thank goodness it was not broken, but it was diagnosed as a bone bruise to his right foot and that is still a serious injury. Robertson is already throwing bullpen sessions and says he will be good to go on Opening Day.

Another scare came from Captain Derek Jeter who is currently resting a sore left calf. The good news is it is not the same leg that sidelined Jeter last season, but still you have to wonder how bad it really is. Jeter has a history of omitting the extent his pain, which is also a team trait. Let’s hope it really isn’t “a big deal” this time. NY Daily News reported that the Captain should be back on the field today. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Mid-spring injury updates’ »

New York Yankees: Harping on another team’s prospect

New York Yankee fans should make a point to tune in, or DVR both today and Friday’s Spring Training games vs. the Washington Nationals.

Bryce Harper

And not to watch the Yankees, but to check out Nationals prodigy prospect Bryce Harper.

This 19-year old is supposedly so ridiculously good it might remind you of the good old days of Lin-Sanity at MSG. Kidding…because in all seriousness this kid is bona fide legit.

The Nationals had Harper back in centerfield today after he was sidelined for a few days with a tender calf. I presume that means Harper will come to Tampa on Friday, as the number one prospect is not shy about his love for the Yankees, or anything for that matter.

Tomorrow the Yankees head to Space Coast Stadium to visit the Nationals and so don’t expect to see many of the New York stars tomorrow but on Friday they will get their first dose of Harper-mania.

If you did not know Harper has an ego to boot and his bad attitude has been a constant problem for the Nationals. One scout described Harper as, top-of-the-scale arrogance, a disturbingly large sense of entitlement, and on-field behavior that includes taunting opponents.”

Well, he was featured on the June 8, 2009 cover of Sports Illustrated and he was only 16-years old at the time. The story’s headline was Baseball’s Lebron, which I think says enough. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Harping on another team’s prospect’ »

New York Yankees: Leave Bobby V to the Bombers fans

English: Bobby Valentine signing a ball at the...

The New York Yankees are hosting the Boston Red Sox today in a meaningless Spring Training game, but one that you might not want to miss.

Yankee fans will tune in and not for the baseball but to see what crap Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine will pull during the game.

Valentine has already started a feud, at least in his head, by taking jabs at both the Yankees Captain Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.

It seemed a little desperate even by Valentine’s standards but he attempting to create a semi-diversion from the Boston booze-hounds that were so sauced they forgot to play baseball last season; which ultimately led to the Red Sox blowing the season and missing the playoffs.

Just yesterday, Valentine decided it was a smart move to say, “See ya,” and wave goodbye to Miami Marlins Ozzie Guillen as he was walking by the Red Sox dugout after being ejected from the game for having a rift with the first base umpire.

Ozzie told the Sun Sentinel’s Juan Rodriguez that he didn’t hear Valentine but did make sure to strike back by stating:

“I would have told him to go f— himself, too. That’s the way Ozzie Guillen is.”

Whether yesterday was a dress rehearsal or not, odds of Valentine pulling something in Tampa are high and expect it to directly aim to piss off Yankee fans.

Valentine will do about anything to get both his players and everyone else focused on the now, but is he going to far, to soon? Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Leave Bobby V to the Bombers fans’ »

New York Yankees: Bad news from Bombers camp

The first bad news out of New York Yankees camp came today, as it seems that All-Star pitcher David Robertson is scheduled to have an MRI on his foot.

This is the last thing any Yankee fan wants to hear, as Robertson was virtually indispensable in the team’s success last season.

Yankees beat writer Bryan Hoch broke the news just minutes ago on MLB.com that Robertson was diagnosed with a right mid-foot sprain after falling down a flight of stairs while moving boxes at his residence.

Robertson has already had an x-ray, which came out negative but that doesn’t explain why he is already wearing around walking boot.

Skipper Joe Girardi said that he thinks Robertson will still be ready for Opening Day on April 5th and that he should miss only two weeks of camp. But Girardi did add, “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Yikes! Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Bad news from Bombers camp’ »

New York Yankees: Positive start

Michael Pineda

MICHAEL PINEDA AS A MARINER....Image via Wikipedia

Today, New York Yankee fans got their first taste of pitcher Michael Pineda and so far, so good.

In his Yankees début, Pineda pitched a solid two innings vs. the Phillies and after giving up a hit to Jimmy Rollins he sat down the next six hitters he faced, posting two strikeouts.

Pineda threw a total of 31 pitches and 19 were strikes, so that has to put a smile on Yankee fans faces.

And please note I am well aware that spring training is no guarantee for anything to come, as the outcomes of the games are meaningless. Some fans were acting like A-rod’s first game yesterday was Game 6 of the World Series, so please try to keep everything in perspective. Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Positive start’ »

New York Yankees: Injury updates already

From the start to the end of Spring Training, players are warming-up their bodies to get ready for the 162-game grind of the regular season.

Unfortunately injury setbacks are inevitable, and daily reports sometimes seem endless but also remember that if a player feels anything is off, he will rest as a precautionary measure.

You can see the most up-to-date injury reports, team-by-team by visiting ESPN Injury Updates ; that is what I do many times daily.

So, here are the early setbacks that have already hit the New York Yankees, courtesy of ESPN: Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Injury updates already’ »

New York Yankees: Alex Rodriguez the comedian

English: Alex Rodriguez

Image via Wikipedia

New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez has come along way since first donning the pinstripes in 2004, and not under the easiest of circumstances.

The self-inflicted bumps along the road seem to be behind the 36-year old, and I must admit that A-rod has given me a good laugh so far this spring.

Following an off-season with no popcorn incidents, no steroid admissions or opt-outs, A-rod seems more comfortable in his own skin now more than ever. And my guess is this will translate into a solid season for the slugger.

Hey and if after the baseball thing, A-rod should consider becoming a comedian with his recent quotes.

On all the Lin-sanity going on in New York surrounding Knicks emerging star Jeremy Lin, A-rod asked:

“If he’s still looking for a place to crash, maybe he can crash at my apartment? Imagine the tabloids then.”

And just a couple of days later, when the Red Sox new skipper Rex Ryan, I mean Bobby Valentine was asked about the pending retirement of now ex-Captain Jason Varitek, he couldn’t help but take another dig at the Yankees by adding “He was able to beat up Alex. All that stuff is good stuff.” Continue reading ‘New York Yankees: Alex Rodriguez the comedian’ »
