Baseball Basics: Watching A Game

Ok, it is time to learn the basics of what goes on in a baseball game, and to make it easier for the newbie it will be split into two posts, over two weeks.

Part One will cover the bare bones about # of games, game break down and how a batter can get on base.

THE SEASON

Baseball season starts in February and ends in October, consisting of three segments, preseason, regular season and post-season.

  1. Pre-season or Spring Training starts in February.
  2. Regular Season starts the first week in April, ending in late September – early October.
  3. Post-Season or Playoffs takes up the month of October, finishing up with the World Series.

There are 30 teams in Major League Baseball.

In a regular season each team plays 162 games.*

A GAME

  • Each team uses nine players in a game.
  • A baseball game is played for nine innings.*
  • Each inning lasts through both teams having a chance at bat and in the field.
  • To start the game, the visiting team will be up at bat first while the home team takes the field.
  • The team at bat hits through three outs and then the teams switch.

UP AT BAT

  • The goal of the game is to score runs.
  • In order to score a run the batter must safely touch first, second, and third bases and end back at home plate.
  • There are many ways to score runs and for batters to get on a base. Here are the basics:

  1. SINGLE: a batter makes it safely to first base.
  2. DOUBLE: a batter makes it safely to second base without stopping.
  3. TRIPLE: a the batter makes it safely to third base without stopping.
  4. HOMERUN: a batter makes it safely around all bases, and back to home without stopping.
  5. GRAND-SLAM: is a homerun, when all the bases are already occupied with a runner, or when the bases or loaded.
  6. WALK: when the batter is pitched four balls, automatically sending him to first base.
  7. HIT BY PITCH: the pitcher hits the batter with the ball, automatically allowing him to go to first base.
  8. ERROR: is when the fielding team makes a mistake (bad throw ir dropping a ball) thus allowing the batter to safely make it to a base. Recorded as an error by the fielder, no credit for a hit given to the batter.

* exception of tied record within a divison where an additional game is played to determine post-season spot.

* in the event of a tied score at the end of the ninth inning, a game goes into extra innings until an inning ends with one team having more runs scored.

Baseball Basics: The Who, What, Where

BASEBALL BASICS

WEEKLY QUESTION:

Last season during the bottom of the second inning, one of my best friend’s cheered, “There is Derek Jeter! Go Jeter!”
Except she was pointing at the catcher, Jorge Posada squatting behind home-plate.
I asked her, “What position does Derek Jeter play?”
She responds, “Hmmm shortstop, right?”

To aide in times like the above, please refer to the basic baseball field outline below.

Baseball Basics: Welcome

Not everyone is a baseball fan, but everybody should be.

Attempts to gain such status are made all the time. The success ratio is about 50/50, with biggest complaints being not understanding the basics, which in turn make games boring, endlessly to long and cause resentment towards the sport itself.

Lady Loves Pinstripes wants to help with a new featured tab called ‘BASEBALL BASICS’.

‘Baseball Basics’

  • is a guide for the beginner fan.
  • will provide explanations/answers to fundamental questions.
  • new ‘Baseball Basic’ posted as questions come are recieved.

The AL East: It Would Be Best To Bring You’re A-Game

How many teams are in this race?

For right now three teams; Tampa Bay RaysBoston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

Why is this week so important in the American League East?

The teams are playing within their own division so the wins and losses have more importance. The third place Tampa Bay Rays host the Boston Red Sox for a two game set. Boston is only a half a game behind the first place New York Yankees. The Yanks are up in Toronto for two nights at the Rogers Centre playing two against the Blue Jays.

With the Blue Jays lagging 12 games behind the Yanks there not really competing. Technically there is always a possibility to not be 100% completely out. I guess miracles do exist but for Toronto it does not look very hopeful or likely of the trio above all collapsing literally on their faces.

Toronto does know that beating the Yankees could potentially take their lead in the AL East right from under the boys from the Bronx. It is doubtful that Boston is going to win two at the Trop; as the best bet would be a spilt series.

Why? The answer is because Tampa decisively needs these wins. If Toronto wins just one and the Rays lose both it will put Tampa a half game behind Toronto. These two night games may very well predict where, last years AL Champs’ season’s future will be heading. The duel in Tropicana Field will both be games of tough baseball.

Let’s not forget that the second place Red Sox haven’t been behind their rivals for a few seasons now and it would be nice to head to the Bronx on Thursday in first place. It has been some time since the Red Sox have been in the lead and trust me they want it back. The Red Sox are going into to a four game series in NY and the rivalry is back to the good old days. Boston has the mentality of knowing that the Yanks haven’t beaten them yet this season. Their advantage lies in knowing how badly that fact kills the Yankee players and the Yankee fans probably hate it more. Boston would like nothing better than to fly back up north in first place and show up the Yanks in their own house again.

Tampa will put out all the stops to not let this happen but it sure ain’t for the Yanks sake. Joe Madden and his Rays are too good to be out of the race so “win, win, win” is mandatory theme.

This will bring the heat index up in Canada, as this has got to give the Yankees the hunger. In all truth, the time has come to one-up Boston. The Bombers know this entails coming home still in first. It is vital not to lose momentum.

Here is the perfect quote for the Yankees to live by:

“Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible.” – George Orwell
